Adventure Vacations 2018 | Articles and Reviews at Family Travel Blog

The most obvious pull for children in sunny Anaheim is the mighty Disneyland Park—and who could blame them for begging to come here? Rides for all ages, well-known characters to meet, and all the color and excitement you’d expect from a larger-than-life Disney experience. If you’re looking for something on a smaller scale, book a pass to Adventure City. With rides, shows, and a mini train, it’s especially suited to younger children.

The Big Easy turns the Big 3-0-0 this year, and in this city where the good times roll, the parties will be epic — think citywide art shows, supersized Mardi Gras parades, and a festival of lights using landmark buildings as backdrops. Thirteen years after Hurricane Katrina, there is much to celebrate: The Central Business District, once a dead zone after dark, now crackles at all hours thanks to four new hotels (the Ace, Troubadour, Catahoula, and NOPSI), each with its own rooftop bar. The neighborhood is also home to new restaurants like Maypop — a Vietnamese-Creole joint from acclaimed chef Michael Gulotta. Another area coming to life is the three-mile riverfront, where a renovated Spanish Plaza will reopen this spring. More riverfront updates, including a new Four Seasons Hotel, will roll out in the next few years. The Epcot theme park has two separate sections: Future World and World Showcase. Future World is home to attractions such as Soarin’, Mission: SPACE, Test Track and the iconic Spaceship Earth, the massive sphere just inside the park entrance. World Showcase is home to 11 country-themed pavilions, including Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Morocco, the United States, France, England and Canada. Each offers dining and shopping experiences, and most showcase a ride or movie experience as well. Participate in the Kidcot program with your children to receive a unique puppet and a stamp at each country you visit.

Children are always welcome on Alaskan Dream Cruises’ smaller ships, but even more so on the Become a True Alaskan Family Cruise sailings (July and August). Set sail into 1856 and experience Key West during the time of some of the most dangerous wrecks and recoveries to date. Kids of all ages will enjoy the costume-clad actors, films and artifacts that tell the story of a time when “wreck ashore!” was yelled every time a new wreck was spotted.
This year, Buenos Aires becomes a hub for art, sports, and politics: the inaugural Art Basel Cities program, the Youth Olympic Games, and the G20 will all take place in the city, beginning with the multi-year Art Basel initiative. Though the Argentinean capital is already home to an eclectic collection of galleries, Art Basel Cities promises to elevate Buenos Aires’ reputation in the global art scene by offering professional support for local artists, as well as lectures and workshops throughout the year to draw art lovers to the city.
Disneyland was founded as a single park by Walt Disney and opened on July 17, 1955, in Anaheim, California. Disneyland Hotel opened to the public on October 5, 1955. The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium provides visitors with an engaging experience thanks to its approach of making science education so hands on. Exhibits such as Nano give visitors the opportunity to build models while the Aquariums of the Atlantic offer daily touch tank demonstrations and live feedings.

Lastly, what would be your suggestion for seeing the main attractions (central park, statue of liberty, times square, empire state building, Brooklyn bridge, The National September 11 Memorial)? How long would we need to stay to visit the sites and not feel like we’re in the NYC marathon?

What child wouldn’t want to go coconut bowling amid the Nemo-like landscape of the eastern Caribbean? The kids’ club here hosts this and more: from board games and craft sessions to family-friendly movie nights. We’re guessing The Little Mermaid features highly, as aspiring Aerials can also learn how to swim like real-life merfolk – complete with requisite tails. It’s enough to make you shake a maraca, which you can also do.
We’ve been told by friends that we have to visit Shake Shack. But now I hear the lines are crazy long. Can you recommend the best Shake Shack for kids and avoiding lines? We’re staying at the Doubletree/Hilton Chelsea.
The New Yorker has a good location – central and steps from Penn Station for subway and train to Newark (if that’s where you’re flying to). Hop On/Hop Off is good for a quick trip around the sights but it’s not great for transportation. Think of it as a tour, not as a way to get from point A to point B (it’s slow and hard to get a spot on if not starting from Times Square). You can buy discounted tickets from salesman that wander around near Times Square. Ask for a deal. Cabs are sometimes cheaper for a family of 4 but subway is faster. The big Toys R Us store has closed but there is a temporary toy store near Times Square (Broadway & 42nd).

A grande dame property on Michigan’s Mackinac Island, this resort, dubbed “America’s Summer Place,” dates back to 1887 when wealthy families arrived for vacations by steamer. Families still arrive by boat and are usually met by a horse-drawn carriage, as motorized vehicles remain prohibited. Part of the old-fashioned fun is getting around by bicycles or by foot. Although not a traditional all-inclusive resort, The Grand Hotel’s rates include a full breakfast and dinner daily, plus supervised children’s activities for ages 5 to 14, Memorial Day through Labor Day.
More than forty years after being founded, the resort now features 10 lifts, 169 runs and an uphill capacity of 17,400 people. The resort also offers ice skating, snow tubing, snowshoe tours and luge sleds. Parents can unwind with a stone massage or herbal wrap at the luxurious Cliff Spa.
Beyond offering a glimpse into ancient history, Jordan is also making a name for itself as a luxury destination. Located at the lowest point on earth, some 1,345 feet below sea level, the resort offers beach access, Middle Eastern cuisine, and treatments containing the mineral-rich black mud. —Jess McHugh
