It was a wonderful, relaxing break…. I guess top of the list would be swimming in the sea, off the back of the boat. I loved both Split and Dubrovnik, but also the lovely islands between them, especially Mljet national park. (more)Eileen Silcock

Another must-do bucket list item is making a pilgrimage to the Great Wall of China. I know, you’re thinking it’s going to cost too much to go all the way there, right? Luckily, there are some really great travel deals, packages that include airfare, hotels, and guided trips to the Great Wall from Beijing—if you know where to look. China Spree has a package to Beijing from San Francisco, L.A., Houston, or New York City, starting at $888 per person for an eight-day trip including round-trip airfare, six nights’ accommodations in a four-star hotel, an extensive sightseeing program including a guided day-trip to the Great Wall, most meals, and all taxes and fees. Another package by China Spree gives you airfare from the U.S., a total of seven nights’ accommodations, many of the same tour perks as the Beijing trip (including the Great Wall day-trip), and tacks on tours and time in Shanghai, from $999 per person for a 9-day trip. The best part: no matter which one you choose, you’ll only be spending about $111 per person per day, including airfare.

I LIVE half the year in a condo on the Sea of Cortez in Baja Sur, Mexico. The comment that gets to me the most is, “I could never afford that.” Excuse me, but we were not wealthy, we just made a decision and made a plunge to buy back 20 years ago. Can you imagine cashing in half your retirement savings to buy a condo in a foreign country? Well IT WAS OUR RETIREMENT and now it is MY retirement. Take the risks, they are the pay offs.

We’ve all been there. The time has finally arrived for the family holiday and we’ve been looking forward to getting away for months. Somehow, despite all the preparation, the car journey took twice as long as we anticipated, the kids are complaining there isn’t enough to do in the resort and there is only so much time you can spend sunbathing on a beach. If only there was a magic formula to keep everyone happy?
Of course, the adventure trend isn’t restricted to hotels; tour operators and cruise ships, too, are offering more soft adventures, like ziplining, kayaking, and nature walks—all things, says Dodds, that enhance the traveler’s experience.
In our mobile age when families are fragmented by distance and distracted by devices, there is nothing like a vacation getaway to bring generations closer. Read more support staff made my trip a complete success. Being physically fit, but age 73, could have made the trek impossible for me. Instead, I shall always remember the Choquequirao route as my ultimate challenge met and conquered. Our head guide, Kantu, was outstanding as she shared local knowledge and helpful experience. Our asst. guide, Ricardo, became my trusted companion, teaching me better techniques and providing encouragement as needed. Mealtime provided not only nourishment for our bodies, but also succor for our souls, as our chef (cook is insufficient) produced varied menus of delicious food, each presented in a fabulous way. Of course, the scenery of the Andes was outstanding, rugged skylines capped by glaciers and green valleys filled with palettes of color. Cloud forest pathways leading past hidden waterfalls were so refreshing. Then, the final goal achieved as I stepped into the mystery of Machu Picchu. What a dream-come-true under a cloudless, azure sky! Thank you, KE for providing me with another adventure to be cherished forever in the scrapbook of my fondest memories.
The sun rises over 400-year-old limestone formations as you set out on a desert hike with your personal guide. Then you’re off to ride horses through red-rock canyons, or fly away for some heli-skiing. You return to your hotel for a spa treatment based on Thai and Indian traditions, then sit down to an organic meal before returning to your chic, modern suite with a private plunge pool and terrace open to the stars.

The breathtaking views on this part of California’s coastline, where the Santa Lucia Mountains drop into the Pacific, have long inspired travelers and artists. Inaccessible by road until 1937, it was one of the state’s most remote areas. Walk in the footsteps of Novelist John Steinbeck, beat generation writer Jack Kerouac and gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, all of whom who once called the region home. There’s ample hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing and beach combing, but ocean swimming can be dangerous. Take a dip instead in the Big Sur River, which has many access spots. You can camp among the redwoods at the state parks in the area. Take the hike to Pfeiffer Falls, and if you’re fit, try the challenging trail to Sykes Hot Springs. You can also visit the historic Point Sur lighthouse. Big Sur is home to the Esalen Institute, a famous retreat center with its own hot springs and spectacular views.
Experience the amazing contrasts of this important South America country. Spend time in its sophisticated capital, Buenos Aires exploring the colourful neighbourhoods. Then fly to Patagonia to El Calafate, home to the awe-inspiring Moreno Glacier. Finally finish at the dramatic and breathtaking Iguazu Falls.

Americans first encountered zorbing—the art of rolling and bouncing down a hill while inside a giant, hamster-wheel-like plastic ball contraption—when teams competing on The Amazing Race a few years ago faced it on TV as one of their big challenges. An adrenaline junkie’s dream come true, Zorbing has been popular since 1997 and is definitely one of those “only in New Zealand” types of experiences to write home about. You have two options: Zydro, a sort of water-ride version of the Zorb, and Zorbit, the dry version. Zorb Rotorua then offers four track options and eight ride variations—some strap in just one person, others up to three for a crazy head-over-heels trip down the half-mile track. Prices for one Zorb ride (either wet or dry) are $45 per person; pay $70 for two people to ride in the same globe; pay $90 for one person to ride three times.
What to Do: Acadia is a DIY kind of park, which is great news for frugal travelers. If you don’t bring your own bike, stop at Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop and rent one (starting at $19 for four hours and $25 for a full day), then take it out on the park’s dense network of carriage roads. If you’re bike-less, choose from easy hikes, such as the two-mile Great Meadow Loop, or strenuous ascents, like the seven-mile Cadillac South Ridge Trail, which takes you from sea level to Cadillac’s peak. If you have a car and want the view without the walking, you can just drive up Park Loop Road to the top of Cadillac Mountain.

It’s no wonder Machu Picchu alone inspires more than a million visitors to travel to South America annually.

What to Do: Lake Tahoe is the continent’s largest alpine lake, so boating is a big deal here. Kayak Tahoe has daily kayak and paddleboard rentals from $65, which may be worth it for a full day of exploration on the lake. For a great view from one of the area’s highest peaks, try the Mount Tallac Trail, which gains more than 3,000 feet of elevation in about five miles.

If you love elevation, there’s not much for you in the flat expanse of the central U.S., but you can find exceptions to the rule in western Arkansas, southwestern Missouri, and a bit of eastern Oklahoma. Here, the Ozarks and Oauchitas – two rugged plateaus that pass for mountains in this part of the world – harbor some world-class driving roads, excellent hiking trails, and great rivers.
Memorable parts? There were many, I would pick Ninh Binh as a fantastic example of Vietnamese landscape. My kids would probably pick the Vespa adventures tour in Ho Chi Min City and my wife the Surnise Hotel in Hoi An. Tips? I would suggest to have an idea of the itinerary and the type of trip and then contact a tour operator with a strong knowledge of the country. Tips are invaluable if traveling for the first time there. I also found extremely useful having a local guide and… (more)Ezio La Rosa

Carnival believes fun is a choice. Fun isn’t a nice to have. It’s a necessity. Fun breaks down barriers, opens up possibilities. That means racing down a giant water slide. Or lip syncing your heart out. Or simply taking a moment to let out a deep “ahhhhh” over a perfect ocean view. When you opt for fun it comes gratis with joy and elation and self-discovery and if you’re real lucky, memories for a couple of lifetimes.

Ethno tourism refers to visiting a foreign location for the sake of observing the indigenous members of its society for the sake of non-scientific gain. Some extreme forms of this include attempting to make first contact with tribes that are protected from outside visitors. Two controversial issues associated with ethno tourism include bringing natives into contact with diseases they do not have immunities for, and the possible degradation or destruction of a unique culture and/or language.[9]
Designated a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1985, the Galapagos Islands gained fame when Charles Darwin used their diverse species to validate his theory of evolution in the 19th century. Today, the appeal lies in up-close encounters with utterly fearless creatures from penguins and sea lions to iguanas and tortoises. Take a diving tour on a yacht to see hammerheads, manta rays and huge whale sharks. These 13 volcanic islands, located less than 1,000 kilometres from the coast of Ecuador, are eerie, beautiful, and unmissable.

In 1987, Kurt and Anne Kutay, founders of Wildland Adventures, birthed a new travel concept we call The Wild Style. They chose to travel deeper, not further; to experience a world that craves our understanding and compassion rather than our judgment; to visit communities that seek to welcome us rather than entertain us.
Why unique properties in such remote destinations? They cater to a new type of globe-trotter, says Paul Largay, a T+L A-List agent and adventure-travel expert: the exotic-pursuant. These thrill-seekers want to experience nature, but not at the expense of creature comforts. “After rolling around in the dirt or chasing a snow leopard,” he says, “these travelers want a fine Cabernet.”

Travel brings to mind faraway and exotic destinations. It invokes images of all the places we’ve dreamed of and seen in movies. Because of that, few people look in their own backyard for adventure — as my Aussie friends always tell me before they jet off somewhere, “Mate, you’ve probably seen more of Oz than I have!” — but it offers just as many places to travel.

When we think adventure travel, we picture trekking peaks, riding rapids and descending into caves. We think big, and we think outdoors, because wild adventure vacations like bungee-jumping, paragliding and zip-lining require a whole lot of sky.
You won’t need much gear for these expeditions, however all challenges will require use of a digital camera, and a bit of online research might help before heading out for some of them. In order to be eligible for prizes upon completion, quest photos will need to be submitted electronically, at a minimum of 3000 X 2400 pixel count (larger is even better!) on CD,  thumb drive (non-returnable), or via wetransfer.com and mail in your booklet. This is not for camera phones unless yours has at least an 8MP camera and can produce the size noted above. Please note that “selfie mode” on cameras is smaller than regular, so check to see if you need to use an actual camera before you get started!

Best Time to Visit: Like Keystone, this is a high-altitude area that experiences rapid temperature changes and gets lots of snow during the winter (November to May). Avoid winter and the peak summer months (roughly late June through late August) and visit during the first couple of weeks of June or anytime during September. Both periods feature lower lodging prices and thinner crowds.
Then, when it’s time to cool off, visit one of Carnival Horizon’s flashiest, splashiest features—Dr. Seuss WaterWorks2, the centerpiece is the two big slides: The Cat’s Hat slide takes you twisting down the red and white stripes of the world’s most famous top-hat, while the Fun Things slide take you through all the topsy-turvy of having the blue-haired pair appear in your living room. While an Alaska vacation may seem pretty far away both geographically and financially, the Alaska Railroad is trying to make it easier to turn that dream trip into a reality. Like many sought-after locations, it’s a good idea to travel during the shoulder season, and in this case, that’s during May and September, to make your trip more affordable and experience the destination when crowds and temperatures are more tolerable. Alaska Railroad offers a variety of vacation deals, but our favorite is the Just the Basics package, a five-day adventure available June thru September each year. Upon arrival in Anchorage, you’ll spend the night in town, giving you a chance to explore the area, visit local sites like the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center, or go for a scenic walk along the Tony Knowles Coastal trail. Next, you’ll ride the rails of the Denali Star Train from Anchorage to Talkeetna and spend the night in rustic cabins surrounded by the spectacular Alaskan wilderness before continuing the next day to Denali. Spend a day checking out the wildlife and views of Denali National Park before returning to Anchorage later the next day. Adults pay $839 per person, and children pay $189 per person for the five-day, five-night package in September; packages June thru August start at $899 per adult and $219 per child. Albania’s star has been rising, with more travellers each year wanting to explore its treasures, such as the Accursed Mountains of the north, and wild beautiful white beaches of the south. Wild Frontiers has two new group hiking adventures there, one at each end of the country. Cycling Holiday across Jordan- great route, some tough weather which is common on winter trips- it requires an above average level of cycling fitness. This was fairly clear on the brochure although the shortened days in winter requiring a faster pace may have been worth highlighting. There is good vehicle back up, which worked really well and accommodation was mostly good- let down in two places, which need a little work ( the home-stay and hostel), but the various small glitches were managed well by the cycle tour guide. Snacks, bike management and the support crew were all of a high standard and I would recommend this trip to other- as long as you are fit enough.
Whether you are looking for a stress-free, easy to organise active family holiday or you are looking to try something completely new or you are experienced travellers looking for a unique adventure, we will have the right holiday for you.   Many of our staff have their own families, so we understand how difficult it can be to find that quiet time needed to plan a family holiday and what makes a holiday fun for children and adults alike.
Best Time to Visit: Winter lasts from November to April in this part of the world, and spring is a muddy, often raw season that can last into June. With the year’s best weather, July and August are Acadia’s busiest and most expensive months. Early to mid-October is peak foliage season, another busy and expensive time. The sweet spot is mid- to late September, when crisp temperatures thin the crowds, but there’s no snow or ice and the leaves haven’t yet peaked. Acadia is significantly cheaper and roomier during this time.
One of the most popular bucket list spots on everyone’s list is Machu Picchu, the mystical land once ruled by the ancient Inca tribes of Peru. It’s definitely one of those places where once you bite the bullet and pay for the airfare to get to Cuzco, the rest is super-affordable. Our friends at G Adventureshave several guided trips to Machu Picchu—choose to take on the four-day Inca Trail hike or simply take the train to the top, it’s up to you. G Adventures is actually giving Budget Travel readers a special 30 percent discount off one of their most popular tours, Absolute Peru, a 21-day adventure that takes you to Lima, Paracas, Nazca, Arequipa, Colce Canyon, Lake Titicaca, Puno, Cuzco, the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo, and into the Amazon Jungle, from $2,309 per person (after the 30 percent discount off the original price of $3,299), including 13 nights’ accommodations, several guided tours, six breakfasts, six lunches, six dinners, all transportation within the country, and all taxes and fees. Translation: you get a whole three-week Peruvian adventure (excluding international airfare) for about $110 per person per day. Covering more than 10,000 square kilometres, Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat, created by long-evaporated prehistoric lakes. What to Do: Keystone Resort has more than 100 miles of single track mountain biking trails. At $40, a day pass is a bit pricey, but definitely worthwhile if you spend all or most of the day on the trail. Nearby Lake Dillon has excellent fishing, with a three-day Colorado fishing license priced at $31. The Keystone area is crisscrossed with free hiking trails, including the moderate, seven-mile Schoolmarm Loop.

Adventure isn’t just about escaping into the wild, of course. It’s about engaging and committing yourself no matter what you’re doing. “People today have the mind-set of wanting to master things,” says Keith Walden of Virtuoso, a network of luxury travel agencies. “They want to go and dive in and learn and be hands-on.”
Tailor made: Available all year. This suggested itinerary can be modified entirely to your personal wishes including departure date, duration, accommodation used and how long you spend in each destination.

Best Time to Visit: Like the Appalachians, the Ozarks and Ouachitas are famous for fall foliage. The season can be a bit later here, typically late October to early November. Though campsite prices don’t increase much, it can be harder to find a spot at this time of year, and local hotels and motels do tend to raise rates. If you’re set on seeing color, you can make it work. If not, visit in April or May, when woodland flowers bloom and summer’s muggy heat hasn’t yet arrived.

We enjoyed it all – wonderful food, pleasant, well informed guides, new experiences. Hanoi is a beautiful and really buzzing city; we’d love to go back. Mai Chau valley is beautiful and developing fast; Halong is like visiting another planet – so strange, so awe-inspiring. (more)Patricia Stoat
Best Time to Visit: The western Dakotas’ climate is pretty extreme, with very short spring and fall seasons. May and October – the shoulder seasons – generally have the ideal combination of low prices and good weather, though unseasonable cold snaps and heat waves (or snowstorms) are possible. The more popular formations and attractions, such as Wind Cave and Mount Rushmore, are extremely crowded during the summer months, especially around holidays and fee-free days like August 25th, the National Park Service’s birthday. Summer crowds are less of a problem in the wide-open spaces of Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt, but temperatures that routinely peak near 100 degrees can be a problem. If you visit during summer, get most of your activity out of the way in the morning or evening – which are also the best time to photograph the Badlands’ spires. And unless you’re an avid motorcyclist, avoid early August, when thousands of bikers descend on the Black Hills town of Sturgis for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
Global Adventure Challenges, which specialises in fundraising events, has a tough but scenic new trip: cycling Wales end to end in three days. Starting from the northernmost point in Anglesey and finishing in Cardiff, it covers 84 miles on the first day, then 104 miles and 70 miles on the next two, with daily ascents of 2,012, 3,200, and 1,700 metres. Not easy. But serious regular cyclists shouldn’t find it beyond their capabilities and will be rewarded by fabulous views of Anglesey and the Brecon Beacons. Participants raise cash for a charity of their choice and stay in hotels and hostels.
If you’re angling for an adventure vacation spot along a well-stocked stream, look no further than southwestern North Carolina. The area’s reputation for excellent trout streams (both wild and hatchery-supported) makes fly fishing a popular pastime in Murphy. Hone your skills during a private, customized lesson with one of the experienced fly fishing guides at Wood’s Outdoor Adventures, or take a guided trout fishing tour through local retailer Appalachian Outfitters.
Sail onto the open waters of the Whitsundays to snorkel through coral reefs and experience the incredible climate of this coastal island chain. This Australia vacation takes you to dive sites across the Whitsundays and stops off at world-famous islands and beaches along the way.
It was a great holiday, and it is very hard to single out one thing. Our trip to the northeast was one of the best bits (I was honoured to be invited to join the other giggling grannies on the floor of the Tay house – if only I was as limber as they are!). (more)Margery Nzerem
Overland travel or overlanding refers to an “overland journey” – perhaps originating with Marco Polo’s first overland expedition in the 13th century from Venice to the Mongolian court of Kublai Khan. Today overlanding is a form of extended adventure holiday, embarking on a long journey, often in a group. Overland companies provide a converted truck or a bus plus a tour leader, and the group travels together overland for a period of weeks or months.
It’s just another day at the Amangiri, a 34-suite luxury resort set in southern Utah’s Canyon Country—one of several newer hotels in rugged locations. And these remote spots take full advantage of their location, offering a menu of adventures along with their luxurious digs.
Perfect. The guides were wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble. We stayed at the best hotel in every town except when we were camping in the hills. The food was excellent with an amazingly wide choice. In the hills fresh food was bought in every day and cooked by our guides – it was delicious. The views were fantastic. The minibus was built as a 12 seater but 4 seats had been removed to make the area more spacious and comfortable. The driver was faultless. We only had to mention an interesting sight on our journeys and immediately the bus was stopped, we all piled out and were given a mini-tour. There was only 5 in our group, which was a perfect number. No-one had an upset tummy which I believe to be because all the meals were freshly provided. I would highly recommend this holiday.
Vacation rentals—which you can book right here on TripAdvisor—are a great choice for active trips, with room for the whole adventurous crew. Choose from homes with their own beachfronts, hot tubs, and fully equipped kitchens for cooking up your catch of the day. They’re affordable, too, so you can save some cash for a post-adventure massage (you might need one).
These destinations are all beautiful and great for any type of trip: a two-week retreat, a fitness vacation, a multi-destination driving tour, or just a quick weekend getaway. With a little planning and the right equipment, you can engineer a frugal vacation that doesn’t require you to make compromises or miss out on the highlights of a destination.
Not every adrenaline-fueled adventure trip is about the great outdoors, and Las Vegas is ground zero for some seriously heart-pounding experiences. If you’ve got the nerve, challenge yourself to jump from the Stratosphere Tower, race exotic cars,  go skydiving, or try “land sailing,” streaking across the desert in a sail-powered trike.

What to Do: Though Yosemite’s vertical assets get more attention, Sequoia and Kings Canyon are popular rock climbing destinations. If you’d prefer to keep both feet on the ground, popular day hikes abound. For an alpine experience, check out the Mineral King area. Prepare appropriately: You’ll need to go slower and pack more water and sun protection at these altitudes. To see more of the sequoia groves than you would from the road, use Grant Grove Village as a home base to explore mid-elevation canyons and crags.

Thousands travel to South America every year to hike the iconic Inca Trail, and this four-day, three-night odyssey through the Peruvian Andes will leave its mark on your soul. Glory in the fortress ruins of Sayacmarca with its elaborate system of canals, the spectacular view of Mount Salkantay, and – climatically – the sunrise panorama of the 600-year-old lost city of Machu Picchu. As the Inca Trail is sold out months in advance, make sure to book your trip with a reputable adventure travel agency.
And in India, Taj continues to focus on adaptive reuse by converting a Hyderabad sovereign’s estate into its latest palace hotel. And to cater to these intrepid outdoorsmen, luxury hotels have opened from the Maldives to Mexico, from Switzerland to South Africa—each with a different level of adventure. At Anantara’s Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort, for example, a fortress outside of Abu Dhabi, guests ride 4 x 4s or sit atop camels en route to a watering hole for glimpses of Arabian oryx and mountain gazelle.
It was a wonderful, relaxing break…. I guess top of the list would be swimming in the sea, off the back of the boat. I loved both Split and Dubrovnik, but also the lovely islands between them, especially Mljet national park. (more)Eileen Silcock

With a land mass larger than Germany and Belgium combined, Yukon offers some of the most pristine wilderness for adventure travelers, says Chris Chesak. The capital of Whitehorse is a good spot to set up base before heading out to activities such as glacial whitewater rafting and alpine climbing. Some visitors take in the vastness by “flightseeing,” booking a small plane to fly up to the top of a glacier and go for a hike. The long hours of daylight during the summer also mean more time to enjoy Yukon’s natural beauty. Try to visit on June 21, the day of the summer solstice when the sun never sets.

While regular zip lining may already give you a heckuva rush, there’s nothing quite like zip lining and completing an aerial obstacle course over a park full of crocodiles, alligators, and hundreds of other reptiles. At the St. Augustine Alligator Farm’s Crocodile Crossing, located along Florida’s northeast coast just outside the historic town of St. Augustine, you can do just that. Not to worry, everything is totally safe. (I have to admit I was a little skeptical myself when I tried this, but figured the bragging rights and bucket list story would be more than worth it in the end). You are trained by the experts before you go about how all the ropes and pulley systems work, and even get to do a small practice zip line before you set off on your adventure. Choose from the 45-minute long Sepik River Course that takes you 20 feet up and gives you three zip lines to go through, or the longer, higher, 90-minute Nile River Course, an aerial obstacle course 60 feet above the park that takes you through a total of nine zip lines. (The 45-minute course costs $30 per person while the 90-minute course costs $65 per person). Both courses are self-led, but there are trainers beneath you to come to the rescue should you get stuck or require assistance. Once my knees stopped shaking (I wasn’t used to being so high up), I tried to concentrate on the view around me and not on the giant, toothy reptiles underfoot, and had a great time!
Just like cruises, tours are best booked last-minute. Tour companies need to fill the seats just like cruise companies, because once that trip departs, they still have the same costs. Last-minute tour bookings work the same way as cruise bookings. My favorite company, Intrepid Travel, often offers 15–30% discounts on last-minute tours.

I’ve been to the Maldives several times in the past decade and seen the resort boom in this remote archipelago. Though I’m not a fan of all the overdevelopment, Addu Atoll, one of the islands south of the equator, has remained relatively pristine. On a sandy outcropping near a coral reef, Shangri-La has built Villingili Resort & Spa (doubles from $1,200), with 16 tree-house villas and 60 timber bungalows that hover over the aquamarine water. 2nd here for Guatemala, especially for families. We took our kids (4 and 7) last summer and it was surprisingly stress-free. Our American friends thought we were nuts, but it totally worked, and was cheaper for two weeks (even including our airfare) than driving to and staying at the beach.

While many of us dream of traveling the world (or at least taking a few months off from work in pursuit of adventure), it’s not always feasible, even for those with the best of intentions. A lot of things can get in the way.
What to Do: The best way to see Zion is on foot. The Zion Canyon area has the highest density of trails, ranging from all-day climbs to short, gentle walks. If you’re feeling adventurous and have the proper equipment, canyoneering and climbing are good options. The Narrows and The Subway are two of the easiest and most popular routes through Zion’s narrow, twisting waterways.
Whether you prefer to scale a rock face, cast a fly downstream or keep your feet firmly planted on the forest floor, if you’re planning your own wilderness adventure vacation this summer, you’ll need a home base—a retreat in the heart of the forest or mountains that’s close to all the action.

Lars, lead guide, and his crew of 4 showed us some thrills of a lifetime. OARS is a class act and definitely know what they are doing. Tents and sleeping pads couldn’t have been more comfortable. Would go again in a heartbeat and want to experience more rivers.”
Read more full of different activities & there are many early morning starts. There is a lot of travel but it is comfortable & stops when needed. The accommodation is good – the hotel in Kitulgala is run down but is compensated by the views of the jungle & river from the bedrooms. I think its worth putting up with the hotel. The hotel at the beach was ok, some problems with ensuring buffet food was hot but improved when we stayed an extra night after the group had gone to the airport. I would suggest that the stop in Bandarawella is changed, the town is pretty drab & there are other places nearby (Ella & Haputale) which would allow trips to Liptons Seat & the train ride. The train ride was a good late addition but would be improved if the train had windows that opened (for views & photos). Overall the holiday was excellent- well organised & appealed to all ages
New Hampshire’s White Mountains aren’t as famous as the West’s large peaks, but don’t be fooled. Mount Washington, the tallest summit in New England, sees some of the most dramatic weather on earth. Just driving the super-exposed toll road to the top is an adrenaline rush. To really leave the crowds behind on an adventure tour, opt for a helicopter trip over the White Mountain peaks and valleys of Franconia Notch. Another fan favorite for getting a bird’s eye view is hopping aboard the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tram.
Exploring the volcanic islands of the Azores during the Azores Trail Run event will blow jogs around the park out of the water. Hardcore runners can opt for the 125km Whalers’ Great Route Ultra-Trail, which begins on Faial at the Salão whaling post and takes in settlements, bays, laurel-covered hills; or go for the 65km ultra, a “vertical sky trail” run steeply ascending 3.5km run up to 1,000 metres altitude on Pico island. “Easier” options include a 42km coast-to-coast marathon, or 25km Ten Volcanoes Trail, passing 10 volcanic calderas on the Capelo Peninsula through moonscapes, plus there’s a mini-family 10km trail and a kids’ trail.

It’s not hard to understand why local native people once worshipped El Penon de Guatape. This giant granite monolith, bordering two small towns in the central Andes, is as eye-catching as it’s steep. Climb 740 zig-zagging steps to the summit. After that thigh-burning ascent, check out local food and handicrafts for sale and admire the surrounding lakes and islands. What to Do: Both Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt have looping drives that offer great opportunities for photographing rock formations – and, if you’re lucky, bison herds. These can typically be done in the course of a leisurely morning. Also, Black Hills is a hiker’s paradise. Choose from gentle walks like the two-mile Dutchman Loop or strenuous climbs like five-mile Harney Peak North. Wind Cave has easy to moderate hiking too, but the cave is the real draw. It’s worth paying for a tour, which typically lasts one to two hours and features a moderate walk through tight passages, majestic caverns, and bizarre underground formations.
Interested families would hike from Cimarroncito Turnaround to Hunting Lodge and Window Rock. While the ongoing financial meltdown may have temporarily taken the wind out of adventure travel’s sails, the state of uncertainty only makes the quest for adventure all the more relevant. As I write in my new book, Extreme Fear, times of crisis have a way of deepening our sense of connection and purpose. After all, as far as we may travel, the real destination lies inside.
Great list Matt. Love the concept of being a tourist in your home town! Recently did a photography challenge which had me looking at my home town differently. Was great fun to get out there over the duration of the challenge, open my eyes and look at things in a different light. I/we run around like crazy getting on with the business of life – it is great to slow down and stop to smell the roses! Have not tried the house sitting option, but have friends who have, and love it! Keeping that on the radar for the future!

Best Time to Visit: Southern Kentucky has a four-season climate with chilly, sometimes snowy winters and muggy summers. The mild transitional seasons (April to May and September to November) are the most comfortable times to visit, though the late October foliage season can draw crowds. Lodging tends to be cheaper during these months as well. Tour reservations are recommended at any time of year, but particularly during the busy spring and summer periods.
Excellent pre-tour communication and everything worked very smoothly. Guide was very good, but I was a bit disappointed that she had never been the ski resort before, so didn’t know her way around and consequently nervous about allowing us down certain pistes. Group was very mixed ability, which meant less tuition than I had hoped for, but all in all it was a wonderful trip.
…our overall experience was amazing! We loved the people and the variety of Vietnamese countryside. We feel that this trip was a quick tour of the country and would love to return to visit areas we did not have time to visit (e.g. the national parks) and revisit areas for longer (e.g. a home stay and trek in Sapa). Ecotourism is now defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education” (TIES, 2015). The objective of ecotourism is to protect the environment from detrimental impacts such as human traffic, and to provide educational information by promoting the unique qualities of the environment. Additionally, ecotourism, “should attempt to move Eco tourists from a passive role, where their recreation is simply based on the natural environment, to a more active role where their activities actually contribute to the health and viability of those environments.” (Orams pg. 5).
The distance may sound galling – two marathons (42km each day) back to back, over the world’s most famous desert – but entrants have two days to complete the Saharan Challenge, and can walk or jog if they don’t want to run. Morocco’s Draa Valley, with its sand dunes and rocky mountains form the backdrop, and daily temperatures hit around 24-27C. The journey involves sleeping under the stars in Bedouin-style camps (that have showers) for three nights, and one in a hotel in Marrakech. There’s lots of support along the way and money can be raised for any charity. The booking includes all travel, meals and a party.

We had a morning horse riding down a flooded area at the start, with our feet touching the water, and then across more open country; the wild flowers and birds were amazing. A 5.30 am canoe trip which was magical, so quiet and peaceful, seeing the beauty of the sun rising and hearing the early morning bird song; the canoe being so quiet we were able to get very close to birds before they flew. Later that afternoon we visited a fishing village down the river and were invited into their one room house… (more)Harvey Bromley
When you think of Morocco, surfboards may not come to mind, but the coastal city of Agadir is actually a surfer’s paradise, says Paul Joseph of Health and Fitness Travel, a company that designs vacation for active people. “It’s got a very strong surf that’s appealing to beginners and experts,” Joseph says. When you’re ready to move on to dry land, head to the Atlas Mountains, located inland, for hiking, trekking or even a yoga retreat. Marrakech offers a romantic history, but it can get a bit touristy, adds Chris Chesak of the Adventure Travel Trade Association. Try to get out of the city and soak up the culture at a local kasbah, or lodge, he adds. The settlements of Merzouga and M’Hamid, at the edge of the Sahara, offer trips into the desert by camel or ATV.
The former Inca Capital and Spanish colonial city of Cusco is our base for this great expedition, letting a city rich with culture, history, good restaurants, and active nightlife take centre stage your Peru vacation.
Urban exploration (often shortened as urbex or UE) is the examination of the normally unseen or off-limits parts of urban areas or industrial facilities. Urban exploration is also commonly referred to as infiltration, although some people consider infiltration to be more closely associated with the exploration of active or inhabited sites. It may also be referred to as “draining” (when exploring drains) “urban spelunking”, “urban caving”, or “building hacking”.
A weeks trek in Croatia was breathtaking literally the surrounding landscape was always beautiful. The trek was graded 3 and others said that was about right, I found it hard work and had maybe underestimated the level of fitness required. The guide Darku was brilliant and made sure I got plenty of recovery breaks without making me feel it was because of me we had stopped. We visited some lovely towns, gorgeous islands, a national park we ate some lovely food and drank some local beer and met some lovely travel companions. KE Adventure were very professional throughout the website gives you a full Breakdown of your itinerary and what you will require. The trip was organised and planned to the tee. Highly recommend. It was a first for us but for the other participants it was repeat bookings with KE Adventure. Thanks for a great trip I won’t say holiday because it was hard work.
Interested families would hike from Cimarroncito Turnaround to Hunting Lodge and Window Rock. Enjoy the majestic views from Window Rock looking down on Base Camp and step into the 1940s with a visit to Hunting Lodge, one of Waite Phillips’ original backcountry cabins. Try your hand at fly fishing on Cito Reservoir after a casting lesson from the staff.

Go with: Nomadic Expeditions, who will take you camel and horse trekking in remote, mountainous western Mongolia, with many nights spent in traditional felt tents with wood-burning stoves. June–July departures; 13 days from $3,735.
Families will love the space of the Family Harbor staterooms and suites—not to mention their proximity to the Family Harbor Lounge, an exclusive spot with breakfast, snacks during the day, concierge service… plus Hasbro board games, family movies, video games and more. The benefits don’t end there — your little girls and boys eat free in most onboard specialty restaurants and get a free evening of Night Owls babysitting service, so you can enjoy a little alone time.
Packages do not include airfare and start at roughly $168 per person per day.

Where to Stay: The main road to Zion’s southern entrance is lined with hotels and motels, such as the Zion Pioneer Lodge and Quality Inn. Rooms are surprisingly expensive during the high season – expect to pay more than $100 per night, even for basic two- and three-star options. The two main campgrounds inside the park, Watchman and South, are much more affordable. Tent-only sites start at $20 per night, with higher prices for riverside spots. For a change of scenery, check out Lava Point Campground, about an hour outside the entrance. At nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, it’s in a cool, leafy alpine forest with great views – but it doesn’t have running water. If you’re doing a multi-day hike, you can reserve dispersed, primitive back-country campsites (no more than five sites per campground) at similar prices.

Even though I work full-time as a freelancer and can make my own hours, I find myself drawn to keeping a nine-to-five schedule, sometimes seven days a week. At the end of the day, I’m usually so tired of staring at a computer screen that browsing travel deal sites to find a cheap getaway isn’t high on my list of priorities.
Pahoa may be one of the summer’s most affordable beach destinations, but spectacular coastal views aren’t all the small town has to offer. This Big Island hotspot entices thrill-seekers with unique experiences like lava boat tours, in addition to more traditional water activities like stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling and scuba diving. A number of the vacation rentals on TripAdvisor even offer kayaks and gear like snorkeling masks as a complimentary perk!
Carnival’s first-ever teppanyaki dining venue features a wide-ranging menu with authentic delicacies from the Far East prepared by highly skilled chefs who create tantalizing dishes on custom-built stations that form the center of the venue’s two eight-seat tables. Teppanyaki combines ancient Japanese cooking techniques with modern performance art to create a feast that is both culinary and visual.
Custer State Park is located just an hour’s drive south of Mount Rushmore and is one of those places where reaching it is half the fun—there are plenty of twisting mountain roads, gorgeous views, and incredible wildlife encounters to keep you on your toes, and very few places on earth where you can actually get stuck in traffic because a herd of buffalo decided to cross the road, so keep those cameras handy! Once inside the park, opt to spend the night camping in the South Dakota wilderness or visit one of the Custer State Park Resorts-I stayed at The Game State Lodge, a beautiful historic property that once served as the “Summer White House” for President Coolidge in 1927 and was later visited by President Eisenhower in 1953. The best part: it’s the launching point for Buffalo Safari Jeep Tours, a spectacularly intimate way to get up close and personal with the park’s diverse wildlife—we drove right up to a grazing herd of bison, past fields of noisy prairie dogs, and ended the night with a traditional chuck wagon cookout. Admission to Custer State Park costs $4 per person per day, or pay $15 per vehicle for up to seven days. Children ages 11 and under get in free. Rooms at The Game State Lodge start at $115 a night. Adults pay $82 each-children ages 12 and under pay $62-for the Buffalo Safari Jeep Tour plus Chuck Wagon Cookout. Prices for just the Jeep Safari are $43 for adults, $36 for kids 12 and under. Prices for just the Chuck Wagon Cookout are $47 for adults and $37 for kids 12 and under.
Coming from a stressful job in the U.K. the best bit for me was the yoga by the sea. I have never done yoga but it was taught very well so I could follow along with ease. It was so relaxing and jumping into the sea afterwards was refreshing and truly revitalising! (more)Katie Gormley

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city on this incredible water safari through the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. Cruising aboard a purpose-built tour vessel, you’ll cruise the picturesque waters of the Harauki Gulf and spot dolphins and whales migrating through the waters.
Accommodation can eat into the cost of a trip big-time. You might get a flight deal, but then accommodation — even if you can find it cheaply — might push the cost of your trip into unaffordable territory. A way around that is to stay somewhere for free. While I like Couchsurfing, it’s hard to do that for two weeks without annoying your host. A unique way to overcome this is to house-sit for someone while they are on vacation. You get free accommodation, a kitchen to cook in, and the chance to explore a destination in depth. It’s a pretty unique way to travel and one that I know a lot of world travelers take advantage of. You can even do this in your own region too, to cut down on transportation costs.
You’ll find a wide variety of outdoor activities in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, but the miles of well-maintained mountain bike trails in and around the area really steal the show. One reviewer calls the beautiful network at Kingdom Trails a “mountain bike mecca,” saying, “If you’re a mountain biker and you’re looking for a destination ride, this is the place to go. The trails are incredible and the variety of terrain is amazing.”
Forget Mexico — go to Guatemala. Skip Paris — head to Budapest. Forget Italy — see Greece (it’s really cheap!). Ditch Brazil and take on Bolivia instead — the list goes on and on. El Penon de Guatape is a two-hour bus ride from Medellin, Colombia’s second-largest city.
The Rocky Mountains erupt on the edge of Colorado Springs, an adventure travel hotspot with easy access to the Front Range. Scale the towering sandstone of Garden of the Gods on a rock climbing tour, then try off-roading into Colorado’s Pike National Forest, driving up to 11,200 feet above sea level.
New Zealand is the favorite destination of Kathleen Ventura and Brock Delinski, the creators of the Our Favorite Adventure website. The island nation has unlimited spectacular coastlines, with high mountains plunging into the surf. The North Island has surfing, snorkeling, diving, boating and swimming, as well as natural forests to explore, says Ventura. The South Island has some of the most epic national parks and is home to many of the country’s Great Walks, or premier tracks that pass through forests, lakes, rivers, mountains and gorges. Be sure to take the Abel Tasman Great Walk for the hiking trails that take you in and out of some of the most beautiful, turquoise water coves and directly down onto the beach, says Delinski. The town of Kaikoura also offers year-round whale watching.
That’s difficult as there were so many memorable moments. The zipwire above the cloud forest was a massive adrenalin rush. Helping to plant trees by potting bags of soil was great too and a great bonding moment for the group. (more)Sylvia Kenna

I could say the same thing as my Aussie friends. I grew up in Boston, and from there, I could visit New Hampshire, the woods of Maine, the bed-and-breakfasts of the Berkshires, or the farms of Vermont. New York was a four-hour car ride from home. How often did I do that? Not often enough!

Excellent way to spend Christmas. Knowledge of guides was excellent. Toubkal was very cold, but added to the experience. Good to get to use crampons and ice axe in the areas which had snow, a great taster if you want to get into mountaineering. 3 nights at the refuge are basic, and sharing a room with 20 people was interesting, it gets quite cramped in there. The second mountain Ouanoukrim is a lot more impressive and would highly recommend doing this. Scenery was a lot better and there was a good scramble. Overall if you have a spare week, id defiantly give this trip a go.
Catching up on your favorites, Matt. I like this one as well. Lots of good tips and feedback. I have always thought that traveling like a tourist made you a tourist, which I always refused as a caricature. I would much rather hang with the locals, eat what they eat, see what they see, go see a band play, get to know some families, etc. The best way to do that is either to meet folks on the road, or meet folks at home, then catch up with them when they move abroad. Military families and marooned business folks could probably use the company and the familiar faces. Crash on their couch, do their dishes, take them out to dinner, make their lives a little better. Sounds like a blast and I don’t do it enough. Anthony Bourdain has a great perspective on this. #swatswishner

The red sandstone formations of Sedona have awed many a traveler. Some say the rocks harbor mystic vortexes of energy. Even if you’re a skeptic, you’ll surely appreciate Sedona’s ability to rejuvenate the soul through hiking, camping, mountain biking and yoga. “Sedona could keep you busy for weeks,” says Kathleen Ventura, co-creator of the Our Favorite Adventure website. The town has served as a backdrop for movies dating back to the 1920s. Be sure to check out Devil’s Bridge Trail and the petroglyphs in the Coconino National Forest. For a high-altitude hiking weekend that packs a punch, KE Adventures’ new group Bulgarian Summits break to the Pirin Mountains ascends two spectacular peaks: Kotelo (2,911 metres), renowned for its dramatic Marble Ridge, traversed by via ferrata, and Vihren (2,914 metres). After riding a cable-car to stay in the Bezbog Hut, walkers follow a ridge to tackle Mount Polejan (2,851 metres) for more vistas and alpine meadows, and finish with a little culture in Sofia before returning home.
