Tishman Company’s plans for two Walt Disney World hotels were rejected by new CEO Michael Eisner on September 30, 1984, marking a change in Disney architecture. New plans for the Dolphin and Swan hotels were submitted by Michael Graves in July 1986;[CDW1 2] ground breaking took place on January 28, 1988.[CDW1 3] The first non-Disney owned hotel, Pickett Suite Resort, opened in Disney World Village on March 15, 1987.[CDW1 4]
Originally, the company was known as Walt Disney Outdoor Recreation Division and later as Walt Disney Attractions. The chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts was Bob Chapek, formerly president of Disney Consumer Products. Chapek reports to Disney CEO Bob Iger. In 2016, the company’s theme parks hosted over 140.4 million guests, making Disney Parks the world’s most visited theme park company worldwide, with United Kingdom based Merlin Entertainments coming in second. It is by far Disney’s largest business segment according to employee headcount, with approximately 130,000 of the company’s 180,000 employees as of 2015. In March 2018, Parks and Resorts was merged with Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media to form Walt Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products.
Family owned since 1941, new management and a recent renovation have given this Daytona favourite a new lease of life. Families love the three pools, volleyball, shuffleboard, and other organised fun and games, and the homemade breakfast doughnuts have become legendary. Most suites have kitchens and family suites have separate bunk-bed rooms for the kids. It’s not the prettiest of hotels but it’s right on the beach and most of its 200-plus rooms have sea views. Thanks to the tightly packed flat sand, Daytona Beach is one of the few beaches in the world that you can legally drive on. Not all of it, mind, just designated sections – and with strict regulations. If you don’t have your own wheels, you can hire beach cruisers, convertible sports cars or trikes. Daytona gets crowded during the spring break and for the Daytona 500, a renowned motor race but the rest of the year it’s a laidback family friendly place, where Perry’s has become a much-treasured institution.

The land where Walt Disney World resides is part of the Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID), a governing jurisdiction created in 1967 by the State of Florida at the request of Disney. RCID provides 911 services, fire, environmental protection, building code enforcement, utilities and road maintenance but does not provide law enforcement services. The approximately 800 security staff are instead considered employees of the Walt Disney Company. Arrests and citations are issued by the Florida Highway Patrol along with the Orange County and Osceola County sheriffs deputies who patrol the roads. Disney security does maintain a fleet of security vans equipped with flares, traffic cones, and chalk commonly used by police officers. These security personnel are charged with traffic control by the RCID and may only issue personnel violation notices to Disney and RCID employees, not the general public.

An hour drive from Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers is the quiet Captiva Island, and if you’re looking for a destination where you don’t have to plan or think (because, well, you do enough of that), this is a great place to park. The island as a whole is a great area for birdwatching and seashell-gathering if you’re looking for leisurely outdoor activities, but resorts provide plenty of other entertainment. We recommend the South Seas Island Resort, whose 300 acres encompass cottages, a harbor, private beaches, tennis courts, a golf course, and three outdoor pools with waterslides. Fun activities for the kids, as well as water sports and bike rentals, are all but guaranteed to tire out the little ones, so grown-ups can escape to two bars, a spa, and three restaurants for a date night or two.

The vibe is very old-time Florida on this tiny island 40 miles south of Tampa. No high-rises, big-chain hotels or fast-food restaurants—just vintage bungalows, small-scale condos and mom-and-pop shops. Ditch the car and do like the locals by biking to bay and Gulf beaches (consider Beach Bums rentals, beachbumsami.com). At the end of the Rod & Reel Pier, fish for your own dinner or order a grouper sandwich from the landmark restaurant. Kayak with retired marine biology teacher Captain Scott to catch a glimpse of dolphins and bird rookeries (beachbumsami.com). For a splurge, try horse surfing in nearby Bradenton: Ride your new friend along the beach, then perch on his back while he trots into the water (beachhorses.com).
This year’s winners prove that every family’s idea of fun is different, evidenced by the vast variety of destinations rounding out the list. The No. 1 winner, Gateway Canyons Resort, is a paradise for adventurous families nestled deep within the Colorado red rocks, while three of the properties provide a scenic, quaint backdrop for a nautical New England trip. Readers still love Hawaii, with repeat favorite Aulani, last year’s No. 1 beach hotel winner, earning high marks on this year’s list, though there are surprising debuts from Argentina, Scotland, and South Africa taking family travel to a new, luxurious level.

It’s been years since we have visited the area so I was happy to hear that it is still a great destination for families with young children. Nicole Wiltrout of Arrows Sent Forth said: “We love the Tampa/St. Pete/Clearwater area of Florida for one simple reason: variety. With three small to large size cities within about 45 minutes of each other, we enjoy the wide range of activities, from farmer’s markets to zoos to aquariums. Plus, the beaches are incredibly beautiful with gentle waves that are perfect for kids to play. You can often find direct, inexpensive flights in and out of Tampa, making getting there easy too.”

Whether the guests are tiny tots, jetsetting teens, or parents and grandparents simply looking for a break, these hotels and resorts take extra care to cater to interests of all ages. And, most importantly, they all get an A in the hospitality department.

The Park Hopper Plus option can be added after the initial ticket purchase. For instance, if you buy a 7-day Park Hopper ticket and decide on the 5th day of your vacation that you’d like to visit the water parks, you can add Park Hopper Plus for $26.63. If you have a 7-day Base Ticket, you will also need to add Park Hopper, so the total upgrade will be $106.50. This will add the full 7 extra visits, which you can use within the 14-day period starting on the day you first started using the ticket, NOT the day you bought the ticket upgrade. Upgrades are allowed within the first 14 days (day of first use plus 13 days) OR before midnight on the day you use the last admission, whichever comes first.
