The New York City Ballet begins its spring season and Broadway plays are in full swing in April. Late in the month, the city’s gardens are at their springtime best. Be sure to see the pink crabapple trees and colorful tulips and daffodils in Central Park’s Conservatory Garden. The park also has many lovely cherry blossom trees, but the real cherry blossom show is at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden where the blooms from some 76 varieties of flowering trees are a glorious sight that inspires a Japanese festival in late April every year. Bring your camera!
Here’s the crucial bit: parents must feel they’re on holiday, too. Adults-only spa time, a romantic meal for two and decor that doesn’t scream ‘Wipe me!’ or ‘Don’t touch!’ all play a part in making the perfect family hotel.
As Canada’s token middle child, Edmonton has long gotten short shrift amid its glitzier sisters (we’re looking at you, Toronto and Vancouver). But no longer — food and museum news is casting a spotlight on Alberta’s capital city. After stints at Noma in Copenhagen and Manhattan’s Daniel, chef Scott Downey returned to his hometown to open the Butternut Tree in September, with a focus on indigenous foods — grilled bannock with wild mushrooms and winged kelp; bison served with Saskatoon berry jus; maple-butter cake with black-currant jam. We’re waiting to make our dinner reservations until the new Royal Alberta Museum opens its doors. Designed by Dialog architects on the site of a former Canada Post distribution center, the 419,000-square-foot space will include Ice Age horse fossils and a dig pit for children. To experience Edmonton’s indie side, stay at Crash Hotel, an homage to the Ace, which opened last winter. Its themed Hi-Fi room walls are lined with vintage speakers, and hangover pills are at the ready in the mini-bar. —Kathryn O’Shea-Evans

What’s not to love about the Caribbean? So many resorts, so little time. To help you make the most of your precious family vacations, we conducted the first-ever data-driven survey looking at the family-friendliness of Caribbean resorts. We worked with the Caribbean Tourism Organization and the Caribbean Hotel Association to compile our initial list of 159 resorts. Then we dug in. We looked at the quality of the children’s programs, staffing and safety, and a multitude of other factors to come up with our final 10. These are the best of the best!
Walt Disney died from circulatory collapse caused by lung cancer on December 15, 1966, before his vision was realized. His brother and business partner, Roy O. Disney, postponed his retirement to oversee construction of the resort’s first phase.

Which one art museum to visit really depends on your interests. The encyclopedic Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the world’s great museums and is a must in the same way that The Louvre is a must in Paris. Sections like the hall of armor and the wall-through Egyptian tomb are of special interest to young visitors. The Met does have modern art collections, especially in its new Met Breuer building, but if your taste runs to modern, you might prefer The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) which is equally renowned in its own special field. Children under age 12 are free at both museums. If you choose the Metropolitan, consider going on Friday or Saturday evening when hours extend to 9 p.m. and the museum is much less crowded.
Coworth Park is the only hotel in Britain to have its own polo club and fields; the equine theme dominates activities and décor, but there’s also biking and tennis to balance all the riding. Coworth Park Kids’ club is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday (£25 per day), and there’s a teen den with games room, and designated children’s hours at the pool. Grown-ups will love the Michelin-starred restaurant. Big families should go for the Dower House, a private, Grade II-listed, three-bedroomed cottage. Read expert review

“We wanted to spend time at the Grand Canyon so I looked for a place that could accommodate all 9 of us (this included some children). Rather than rent numerous hotel rooms I decided it might be fun to all stay together in a house. The description of this house made it sound interesting and close to town so we chose it. Best decision ever!” — TripAdvisor Reviewer
The New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom opened on December 6, 2012. It is the biggest upgrade to the theme park since its opening in 1971. Announced along with its new Star Wars Land expansion at the D23 Expo on August 15, 2015, Hollywood Studios was slated to have a version of Toy Story Land.

As well as cots, can the hotel help lighten your luggage by providing some of the paraphernalia, from bottle-warmers to buggies? Maybe there’s a playground, a well-stocked games room or watersports centre, or a welcome basket of toys in your room.
“Oohs” and “ahhs” fill the air every half-hour as performers engage in airborne stunts on the resort’s center stage. Surrounding the stage is the Midway, an enormous carnival filled with 200 games and wandering clowns. Possibly the world’s biggest funhouse, the indoor Adventuredome theme park continues the excitement with more than 20 rides, plus miniature golf and laser tag.
3) Is the Musical Hamilton suitable for kids/teenagers? We are trying to decide whether Hamilton or Matilda is better for the children. Any thoughts? (Any differences with locations of the 2 theaters and which is easier to get to?)
This stunningly set hotel has on-site stables (you can bring your own horse or borrow one), a cookery school, 500 acres to wander, and a beautiful spa with a pool that has children’s hours, plus bicycles, board games, and a spectacular play cottage filled with toys and activities (though children must be accompanied by an adult). The fine brasserie has a children’s menu, and the Michelin-starred restaurant is a treat and welcomes children over the age of five. Read expert review

We are looking for a nice modern hotel with some space in the room, maybe with a divider. We are staying for 6 nights. Currently looking at the Tryn Hotel, do you know of any similar style, size rooms, price…
Many of the live shows at WDW are described in our individual park sections above, but there are also some parades and shows that warrant special mention. We’ve also included a generous selection of photos when it’s warranted:
Located in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, Mammoth is a popular ski area in winter and an ideal summer destination. Hiking, from easy to challenging, attracts visitors who seek out waterfalls and scenic views. Mountain biking is another way to experience the peaks, from beginner-friendly to more rugged routes. This year, pedal assist e-bikes will be permitted in Mammoth Bike Park, making the trails accessible to even more riders. Or just relax and take in the views from the gondola as you ride to the summit at 11,000 feet. As a spectator or participant, the June Lake Triathlon on July 7 will be a memorable event. Camping, fly fishing, boating, playing golf at Sierra Star Golf Course, at a full mile and a half above sea level, or just breathing in clean, cool mountain air make a visit to Mammoth Lakes a great summer trip. Consider a stay at the Westin Monache Resort with a heated pool and plenty of activities for the kids.
The nation’s fourth-largest city is rebounding from a disastrous late-summer hit by Hurricane Harvey. But tourist areas escaped major damage, the Astros won the World Series, and the city is hitting home runs with its lineup of museums and restaurants. Represented by Houston’s notably diverse population, restaurants serve eats from steak and barbecue to down-home chicken and waffles at the Breakfast Klub (hometown heroine Beyoncé is a fan) to Greek, Korean and Vietnamese. Onetime undocumented immigrant Hugo Ortega won the 2017 James Beard Foundation’s Best Chef: Southwest award for Hugo’s, serving Mexican favorites made from scratch. Xochi, honoring Mexico’s Oaxaca region, is his newest eatery.
With ten pools, a sprawling (45,000-square-foot) water park, a shopping center, a spa complex, and more restaurants than you can shake a breadstick at, the family-friendly Beaches is one of the most features-heavy resorts in Turks and Caicos. With a pirate-themed Sesame Street Treasure Caravan; 12 miles of white sand beach; pools staffed by lifeguards; Pirate’s Island Waterpark featuring two waterslides; AND Crayola Art Camps (whew!), your little ones can be entertained while you head for a rum punch. For the tweens and teens, there’s a Martha Stewart Crafts Studio, a (teen-appropriate) nightclub and lounge, an Xbox games garage, and even a DJ academy.
Remodeling and redecoration has led to Watergate Bay taking its place as the pre-eminent Cornish hotel for a contemporary family seaside holiday. Set on a spectacular surfing beach, it has a great, easy-going atmosphere, cool, breezy décor and fun places to eat nearby, including Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen. Adults can also spoil themselves in the Swim Club spa, while children will be entertained with organised games, crafts and activities. There’s evening entertainment, and not forgetting the hotel’s Extreme Academy for surfing and other watersports. Read expert review
Parents should note that although the LEGOLAND attractions are decidedly for youngsters, the ease with which you’ll be able to move from one to the next make it appealing for parents looking for recreation that’s a little more self-contained. As a bonus, you can also enjoy a tropical cocktail by the pool while watching your kiddos.
Political strife and economic woes have taken a toll on Egypt’s tourism industry in recent years, but travelers will soon have a new reason to visit. On the arid plains of Giza not far from the Great Pyramids, a modern monument is under construction that’s more than two decades and nearly $1 billion in the making. The Grand Egyptian Museum will showcase the finest treasures of the pharaohs — including the body and golden funeral mask of Tutankhamen — in a structure spanning nearly 650,000 square feet.

Yes, baseball season begins in early April. You can get schedules of home games and order tickets at the web sites of the New York Yankees (nyyankees.com) or the New York Mets (nymets.com). If you want better seats than the team has available, check sites like Stubhub.com and Seatgeek.com, where season ticket holders often sell tickets for games they cannot attend. When the teams are playing out of town, both stadiums offer behind-the-scenes tours, with the chance to visit locker rooms and dugouts, see some of the expensive private boxes, and actually go on the field. Early in the month you can also see basketball and hockey in action. Madison Square Garden hosts the Knicks (nba.com/knicks) and the women’s Liberty (liberty.lnba.com)basketball teams as well as Rangers hockey (rangers.nhl.com) Barclays Arena in Brooklyn is home to Nets basketball (nba.com/nets) and Islanders hockey (islanders.nhl.com).

Nestled among towering pine trees, Disney’s rustic-meets-luxe resort lets families experience glamping without straying too far from the Magic Kingdom. “Disney is masterful when it comes to immersion experiences,” T+L reader Susan Knight said. “You can be in Florida, in July, when you can slice the humidity with a Boy Scout knife—but you will feel like you’re in the Great Northwest.” The lobby features multi-story totem poles, a replica geyser, and a waterfall-fed rock pool. Outside, there are more activities than you’d find at a summer camp, including rides in a horse-drawn carriage, boat rentals, a children’s activity center, and a waterslide carved from rock that splashes into a heated pool. There are also nature trails to explore, and campfire sing-alongs at the Wilderness Resort and Campground. Some of the fan-favorite attractions on this list, including the beach and playground, are currently closed for refurbishment. But come 2017, they’ll be better than ever.
Much like the other sprawling resorts that line the beach in the swanky Marina Vallarta golf community, the CasaMagna Marriott features top-notch restaurants, pools, and meeting rooms, as well as lovely guest rooms and suites that feature modern amenities and contemporary furnishings. Housed in two towers, this upscale hotel is memorable primarily for its sumptuous Ohtli Spa and adjacent fitness center with indoor lap pool. Somewhat removed from Puerto Vallarta’s nightlife scene, it is a great spot for travelers who want to unwind away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Kids will enjoy the seasonal turtle release programs, as well as the sleek kids’ club.
Yellowstone is a massive, nearly 4,000-square-mile park that hosts more geothermal features, including hot springs, mud spots and geysers, than anywhere else on Earth. Here you can be mesmerized by most famous, Old Faithful, which shoots steam as high as 185 feet into the sky every 90 minutes, along with many other lesser-known geysers, mud pots and brilliant multi-colored hot springs like Grand Prismatic Spring, named for its striking array of colors that match the rainbow dispersion of white light by an optical prism of orange, yellow, red, green and blue. The park is also famous for its wildlife, with an abundance of bison, elk and Bighorn sheep, along with wolves and bears. By staying just outside the park, you’ll find multiple budget-friendly options, like Kelly Inn West Yellowstone.
Tel Aviv has attracted a lot of attention for its nightlife and creative culinary scene in recent years. These days its center of gravity has shifted south, to the site of the ancient port town of Jaffa (technically part of the city itself). This month, the Setai opens in a former Ottoman prison; a new W Hotel housed in a 19th-century former convent and pilgrims’ hospice is scheduled to open in March. It’s just the latest in a growing list of upscale hotels, restaurants, and boutiques to arrive among the winding streets of this former fishing village. Jaffa’s once-shabby flea market is now populated by a number of high-end antique dealerships, which sit alongside trendy cafés and bars — many offering live music into the night. Don’t miss Maskit, an iconic Israeli fashion house known for its embroidery that has been recently reincarnated after closing in the 1990s. Numerous interesting chefs have also set up shop among Jaffa’s churches, mosques, and archaeological sites. Try Beit Kandinof, a restaurant housed in a 17th-century building, where creative dishes like artichoke-and-pesto bruschetta are served alongside local art exhibits. —Sara Toth Stub
White-sand beaches run the length of the 96-acre Kamalame Cay private-island resort. If your kids aren’t smitten with the place from the moment they hop off the private ferry from Andros, the fresh homemade cookies laid out each afternoon should do the trick. Villas are pricey, but a good choice for multigenerational stays. Alternatively, the all-inclusive Small Hope Bay Lodge on Andros has 21 beachfront cottages.
For families with young children, the Upper West Side bordered by Riverside Park and Central park is an excellent choice, with many playgrounds and scenic paths for strollers in both parks and good public transportation facilities if you need them. The Excelsior is ½ block from Central Park, as is a New York branch of the La Quinta chain. The Hotel Beacon, midway between the parks, has kitchenettes in every room. If the wedding location makes the East Side more convenient, you could consider the Courtyard New York Marriott near Carl Schurz Park on the East River or the boutique Hotel Wales near Central Park. No hotels have dedicated play spaces, but many do offer cribs and high chairs for families. Ask when you book.
There are many getaways to choose from in Canada, such as the Canadian Rockies, British Columbia, St. Andrews by-the-Sea and Banff. Best getaways provide parents and kids with plenty to do so that they can re-connect while learning new activities and exploring new destinations. A full service resort with a tropical beach where you will be able to swim, kayak, snorkel and relax is ideal if you need a place to recharge.
One way to save on theater tickets is to join Theatermania, Broadway Box, or Playbill online. These discount ticket services offer good savings on a long list of shows, all but the few sold-out offerings. Joining is free, you pay with a credit card, and pick up your tickets at the box office before the performance. Often you can see a seating chart and choose your seats. You do have to add a service fee if you order online, but the saving is still substantial and you have a wide choice of plays.
An Italianate country house set in 55 acres of parkland with contemporary-cool interior styling. Cowley Manor has dreamy and extensive grounds – ideal for family picnics – chic interiors, and a wacky bar where children can eat (they’re less welcome in the main restaurant). The icing on the cake is the exceptional spa with two swimming pools, which have special times for children. Families are encouraged to book the interconnecting ‘Great’ rooms in the main house. Summery daytime temperatures in the mid-80s and cool nights make July a lovely time to visit Santa Fe. The city’s well-known creative culture is in full bloom, with the four-day Art Santa Fe show set for July 12-15, this year presenting contemporary art from around the world. The Traditional Spanish Market to be held in downtown Santa Fe on July 28-29 will feature the work of around 250 Spanish colonial artists with woodcarving, tinwork, weaving, jewelry, pottery, ironwork and more. Music lovers come for the month-long Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival beginning July 15. For opera fans, the annual festival will include performances of Madame Butterfly and Candide. Hiking, horseback riding, biking, and simply taking in the views of the nearby Sangre de Cristo Mountains will keep visitors busy when they’re not enjoying the art and music. The Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado would make a perfect home base no matter what your other plans are.

As one of the only two skeleton museums in America, Skeletons: Animals Unveiled! features over 40 exhibits and more than 500 real animal skeletons. With everything from an African Safari exhibit that features massive elephant and giraffe skeletons, to the creepy flesh-eating beetles that help clean the bones, this place will keep the kiddos exploring all day.
Landlocked Laos might be quieter than Southeast Asian neighbors like Vietnam and Thailand, but 2018 could transform the country into the region’s next hot spot. Wattay International Airport, in the capital of Vientiane, is set to complete a terminal expansion to accommodate more international links next year, but the biggest changes are foot in the UNESCO World Heritage–inscribed town of Luang Prabang, in central Laos. This serene riverside spot lures travelers to its golden Buddhist temples, French-colonial architecture, hiking trails, nearby elephant sanctuaries — and now, glamorous new digs. Last year, the design-forward Azerai opened inside a century-old French-colonial building that was formerly an officer’s quarters. The debut concept from Aman Resorts founder Adrian Zecha has airy, light wood interiors that nod to local culture in their use of batik textiles and Laotian artwork. There’s also an 80-foot swimming pool in a tree-shaded central courtyard. The upcoming Rosewood Luang Prabang aims to be a destination in itself. Opening in mid 2018, this highly anticipated resort will feature pavilion-style villas, luxury tents, and a spa that seems to float above the jungle. —Kate Springer
