Disneyland, changed from Disneylandia, was announced in April 1954 by Walt to be opened in July 1955.[CDL 3][CDL 4] On July 17, 1955, the Disneyland park with five themed “lands” containing eighteen attractions with double the expected guests.[CDL 5] WED owned Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad opened, too.[11]
Set in 100 acres of Oxfordshire countryside, Soho Farmhouse offers a bucolic setting, spacious Nantucket-style accommodation, the facilities of a Center Parcs on steroids and indulgent food and drink. The result? The ultimate ‘country-lite’ retreat. Electric milkfloats whisk guests around the estate, while families pedal by in matching dressing gowns and cow-print wellies. There’s an indoor and outdoor pool, boating lake, tennis courts, football pitch, horse riding and the outstanding “Teeny Barn” kids’ club (an old horse box is the library, kids can collect real eggs from the coup and so on). Not sponsored at all. Hotels don’t know who I am or when I stay there. With just a few rare exceptions I have no interaction with the hotels I review (beyond what a normal guest would have – e.g check-in, check-out).
Disney’s Village Resort — Became the Villas at Disney Institute and then Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa. The “Tree House” Villas were decommissioned for a time because they were not accessible to disabled guests. Until early 2008, they were used for International Program Cast Member housing. In February 2008, Disney submitted plans to the South Florida Water Management District to replace the 60 existing villas with 60 new villas.[28] The Treehouse Villas opened during the summer of 2009.
The jewel of the Adriatic Sea, Croatia is home to more than 1,200 islands, but travel between them has long been dictated by expensive yacht charters and sluggish public ferries. In 2018, that’s set to change, now that UberBOAT, from the popular ride-sharing app, has launched on-demand transfers and private tours along the Dalmatian Coast. Hit the high seas in the direction of Šolta, a hilly isle a mere nine nautical miles from Split (the second-largest city in Croatia).
Olas Verdes is the area’s first LEED-certified hotel, and its location near Playa Guiones makes it ideal for beach-lovers. The flexible layout lets you connect suites, depending on your family’s size. Two-bedroom units sleep up to seven, and rates include daily breakfast.
Stay at this all-inclusive paradise and revel in luxurious accommodations, including Kids & Co family rooms. Each room features a “Sweet Dreams” treat, discounted activities for children, separate check-in with juice and toys, and more.

Move over, Croatia. Long overshadowed by its neighbor to the northwest, Montenegro is ready for the spotlight. The ancient city of Kotor is already attracting plenty of visitors, like the celebrities vacationing at luxurious boutique hotel Forza Terra, just outside the medieval walls, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of cruisers who’ve arrived with companies like Viking, Celebrity, and Princess. The swank marina Porto Montenegro is thriving in the formerly sleepy coastal town of Tivat, and the complex’s Regent hotel unveiled an expansion in 2017. Nearby, luxury development Luštica Bay is slated to open this summer, with plans for villas, a golf course, and a five-star Chedi hotel. Further west on the Bay of Kotor’s jagged coastline is the site of the country’s most anticipated arrival, the One&Only Portonovi, which will be the brand’s first European outpost when it opens this summer. Plans for the resort, situated on a 60-acre site overlooking the Adriatic, include 140 villas and residences, a tennis club, and a spa. —Meredith Bethune
Warm July weather with temperatures in the 70s makes it an ideal time to visit St. Petersburg, and travelers from around the world gather to enjoy the art, palaces, historic monuments, and the annual White Nights Festival. Beginning in late May through most of July, the long days and midnight sun are the backdrop for late evenings of cultural events, concerts, ballet, opera, and celebrations. During the day, there are museums to explore, including the Hermitage Museum, home to prized works of classic Western artists, including Rembrandt, VanGogh, Picasso, and Michelangelo. The Russian Museum houses the largest collection of Russian art in the world, and the Faberge Museum has a collection of paintings and sculpture in addition to 15 of the famous jeweled Faberge eggs. Sumptuous palaces and gardens also attract tourists, and many visitors enjoy seeing the city from a boat along the Neva River.
Located about an hour north of Pensacola, right on the Alabama line, sits the small town of Century, previously known as the village of “Teaspoon.” An old timber mill, retired railroads, and other preserved sites keep the memories alive of a Southern mill town that was built on the hope for a successful, lasting settlement that would exist long beyond the economically booming years of the timber mill. In the heart of century lies the James Houston Jones Historic Park, home to three museums operated by the Alger-Sullivan Historical Society, which are free of charge and open to the public. Starting with the Leach House, explore the everyday life of century natives at the turn of the 20th century in the original Leach home place. Next, take a tour of the boxcar museum, which features actual railcars, parts, pictures, and maps that demonstrate countless miles of travel throughout the southeast dating back to the 1800s. Lastly, stop by the 1913 post office museum, a dedication to memorabilia from the old mill, past post offices, and other sites that played a huge role in Century’s development. After the tour, books written by members of the historical society allow you to continue your journey through time as you learn about how one small piece of the South endured through a changing industry, as well as other obstacles of that time period. These books are available for your viewing on-site or for purchase. One of Escambia County’s best-kept secrets, a day-trip to Century is a great way to expand your knowledge of our Gulf Coast history. For available hours, call the society President, Jerry Fischer, at 850-256-3980
Known as the Tibet of Japan, the remote Iya Valley is tucked away in the mountainous interior of Shikoku, the least visited of the country’s four main islands. Tourism to the region took a leap forward when it hosted the World Rafting Championship in 2017 — putting its turquoise Class Four rapids firmly on the adventure-travel map. New ziplines and hiking trails are sprouting up in the canyons, while upgrades have been made to accommodations in the area’s traditional thatched-roof farmhouses, or minkas. Chiiori House is the most luxurious; the property also maintains an excellent portfolio of more affordable options. —Adam Harney Graham
Three great hotel with interconnected (adjoining) rooms are the DoubleTree Suites – Times Square, Hilton Times Square, and StayBridge Suites. One other idea you might explore is an apartment. Booking.com has a list of furnished apartments available for short-term stays. As does furnishedquarters.com. A variety of neighborhoods will be available so you can decide which is closest to the sights you hope to see. Just be sure you are close to public transportation. For seeing the sights with a minimum of walking, the hop-on, hop off bus may be a good option, especially given your range of ages. It will take you to most of the city’s main sights and leave it to you where you choose to get off and how long you want to stay. That said, it can be hard to get back on the bus and get a seat from a non-Times-Square stop.

Guests climb stairs, ladders, even a 90-foot-long suspension bridge. Disney expanded into attractions at the 1964 New York World’s Fair with It’s a Small World[18] and costumed character appearances. When the characters proved a hit at the 1964 World’s Fair, Walt wanted another outlet for “live” characters; thus, Disneyland put on Disney on Parade, a self-produced live arena show starting in 1969.[7][19] Small World and its famous song lasted two years at the fair; it was then moved to Disneyland as an expanded major attraction in 1966 and later duplicated in the other Disney theme parks.[18]
Your child may be on his or her way to being a master builder—or not—but either way, few Florida destinations are as child-friendly as Winter Haven. That’s because of the incredible LEGOLAND, where single- or multi-day passes are available to purchase. This child-centric haven is practically overflowing with Lego bricks. What’s more, every room is themed—from pirates to knights to adventurers.
It’s no secret that Fiji is home to some of the world’s most spectacular scenery — powdery beaches fringed with palms, crystalline waters with colorful reefs, and rugged coastlines covered in greenery. But the islands’ new crop of luxury accommodations is making a case for the archipelago’s man-made phenomena as well. At the exclusive, family-owned Kokomo Private Island Resort, which is spread across 140 acres of dense tropical rain forest and white-sand beaches, guests will have their pick of 21 beach villas (among the most spacious in Fiji) and four hilltop residences featuring infinity pools and walled tropical gardens. If you’re a diver, you’re in luck: the Great Astrolabe Reef, which is teeming with kaleidoscopic corals and exotic marine life (like reef sharks, rays, and dolphinfish), is in the resort’s backyard. The luxury ante will only be upped in March when a Six Senses debuts on Malolo Island. Set on a private beach, the boutique property will offer the brand’s namesake spa and wellness offerings (including yoga, meditation, and nutrition and sleep counseling), plus a restaurant with ingredients sourced from the resort garden. Also slated to open in 2018: Nihi Fiji, from hotelier James McBride and Christopher Burch — the same duo behind Nihi Sumba Island, which Travel + Leisure readers named the best hotel in the world for 2017. —Melanie Lieberman
Which one art museum to visit really depends on your interests. The encyclopedic Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the world’s great museums and is a must in the same way that The Louvre is a must in Paris. Sections like the hall of armor and the wall-through Egyptian tomb are of special interest to young visitors. The Met does have modern art collections, especially in its new Met Breuer building, but if your taste runs to modern, you might prefer The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) which is equally renowned in its own special field. Children under age 12 are free at both museums. If you choose the Metropolitan, consider going on Friday or Saturday evening when hours extend to 9 p.m. and the museum is much less crowded.
The last of the four main parks built at Walt Disney World.  Disney is quick to remind us that Animal Kingdom is nahtazu (not a zoo) but this themed park has many animals from all over the world, mainly from Africa and Asia like elephants, tigers, lions and crocodiles.  There are fun shows, rides and now even nighttime laser shows as the park is open after dark!
Break up a day at the beach with an outing to the Cayman Islands National Museum. The colonial-era building depicts the island’s natural and cultural history in 3-D displays, murals and videos. Or spy colorful blue iguanas at the Blue Iguana Recovery Program, located in the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park. A 90-minute guided tour is suitable for the entire family, and if grandma doesn’t share the kids’ fascination for lizards, she can always enjoy the native flora in the park instead.
You don’t have to travel overseas; try a Western USA Family Holiday. Hit the beach in San Diego to surf and swim. Then head to the Grand Canyon to watch the sun paint the canyon walls and hear rangers explain park geology. Drive on toward dazzling Las Vegas, and, if you dare, venture into Death Valley, the hottest, driest spot in the country, where you’ll find volcanic craters, mountain peaks and salt flats. Don’t miss the giant sequoias and granite cliffs at Yosemite National Park. End your trip by returning to San Francisco via Monterey, where you can visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, go kayaking, or journey by boat to spot sea lions, otters and whales.
Disney’s security personnel are generally dressed in typical security guard uniforms, though some of the personnel are dressed as tourists in plain clothes. Since September 11, 2001, uniformed security has been stationed just outside each Disney park in Florida to search guests’ bags as they enter the parks.
