In Tennyson’s famous poem, the eagle was ‘ring’d with the azure world’ – and so it is at Eagles Villas, where the Aegean Sea takes centre stage for aquatic adventures, from snorkeling and sailing to scuba diving. There’s plenty for land-loving littl’uns, too: tennis courts and an excellent kids’ club will free you up to be buffed and scrubbed at the spa, or to clink glasses at the mellow beach bar.
The Sea Pines Resort beckons golfers from around the world with its candy cane-striped lighthouse, which sits just behind the 18th green at the famous Harbour Town (known as the “must play” course on an island of 50 outstanding golf courses). But the links are just one option for family fun at this 5,000-acre upscale compound. There are also five miles of pristine beaches, 20 miles of bike trails and nature paths, and an extensive menu of year-round activities. Families can enjoy sightseeing by bike, crabbing, horseback riding, tennis, kayaking, fishing—even a boat safari to spot alligators in their natural habitat.
This nautical-themed lakeside hotel is just a short ferry ride away from Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The sleeping quarters, appointed in blues and creams, have private balconies—some overlooking the resort’s featured attraction, Stormalong Bay. This three-acre water wonderland has a sandy-bottomed swimming pool, water slides (a mini for the tadpoles and a high one atop a shipwreck for experienced swimmers), tranquil “quiet” pools, a lazy river, whirlpool spas, hot tubs, and an elevated tanning deck. Families can also play a round of mini golf or rent a boat from the marina and charter their own voyage around Crescent Lake.
Our selection of fun family vacation spots proves that it is possible to plan an awesome summer vacation without dipping too far into the savings account. Whether your crew is looking to relax on the beach or ride the whitewater rapids, we have affordable vacation suggestions for every taste.
Active Getaways: It’s amazing how many things kids are interested in if you sit down and talk to them about it. A 12-year-old may want to take a cooking class and learn how to prepare meals using farm-fresh ingredients with the hotel chef. A 5-year-old may want to see a polar bear swimming in a pool in a local zoo. A 3-year-old may be extremely interested in building various machines from blocks and legos so his ultimate dream vacation may be a morning spent at Legoland. Getaways with a touch of adventure create fun memories. In California, visit Safari West and watch unique wildlife in a natural setting. Take a cruise aboard Disney Fantasy, a mega ship that offers many things to do and comfortable staterooms with an extra half bath. At Vista Verde Ranch in Colorado, kids can go horseback riding and learn about the inns and outs of a working dude ranch. Lake Villarrica in Chile is a stunning lakeside getaway with a view of a volcano. Explore the natural wonders of the Pikes Peak region of Colorado, go horseback riding and visit a zoo. Other cheap family vacations include Yellowstone and Jackson Hole where you will be surrounded by the spectacular Tetons.
Coming to NYC beginning of August with our 2 kids (7&9). We don’t really want to be in Times Square. We also want a nice hotel that has a bar we can get drinks at night. Free breakfast would also be a plus. Walking distance to restaurants (not chain). Kenleh
Last summer, the museum expanded its artistic footprint by over 130,000 square feet, making it the largest contemporary art space in the country. The new Building 6 houses long-term installations by artists like James Turrell, Louise Bourgeois, and Jenny Holzer. Two new museums are still in the works for North Adams, both spearheaded by former Guggenheim director Thomas Krens. At the Global Contemporary Art Museum, curators will work directly with artists to acquire and commission site-specific pieces, while the Extreme Model Railroad & Contemporary Architecture Museum will showcase works by the likes of Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, all built in miniature as part of an elaborate model train system. Design is also top-of-mind at Tourists, a modern take on the roadside motel that’s set to open this summer. The resort — situated on 55 acres at the convergence of the Appalachian and Mohawk Trails — will have 48 rooms, each with floor-to-ceiling windows that put the focus on surrounding vistas. —Fiorella Valdesolo
Stop by the concierge desk for special Junior Guest registration, and children will receive a Kids’ Fun Pack introducing them to the resort. The kids’ camp is the perfect opportunity for 5- to 12-year-olds to play tennis and golf, swim, fish, have theme days and make arts and crafts. Don’t forget to sign little ones up for Kids’ Night Out, a pizza and game party that allows parents to have a romantic date night at one of the four signature restaurants on-site.

Parents should note that although the LEGOLAND attractions are decidedly for youngsters, the ease with which you’ll be able to move from one to the next make it appealing for parents looking for recreation that’s a little more self-contained. As a bonus, you can also enjoy a tropical cocktail by the pool while watching your kiddos.
If you’ve ever had the urge to send your teenager packing, now’s your chance: Give them this checklist and let them pack their own bags. (Okay, there’s also a checklist for things you might want to hold on to yourself, like your child’s ID and first aid supplies.) Here’s everything your teen needs to be prepared for your next trip.
Located on 1,200 acres of land, Woodloch Pines traces much of its success to a decision not to host a children’s program. Instead, the lakefront Poconos resort provides much for families to enjoy together. In the summer, guests can water ski, kayak, sail, bike, hike, play mini-golf and swim in indoor and outdoor pools. Join in family games, cookouts, scavenger hunts and karaoke, too. In the winter, go snow tubing, ice skating and fishing. Room rates come with meals and most activities. The two- to five-bedroom Guest Homes may be rented with or without a meal plan.

The nation’s fourth-largest city is rebounding from a disastrous late-summer hit by Hurricane Harvey. But tourist areas escaped major damage, the Astros won the World Series, and the city is hitting home runs with its lineup of museums and restaurants. Represented by Houston’s notably diverse population, restaurants serve eats from steak and barbecue to down-home chicken and waffles at the Breakfast Klub (hometown heroine Beyoncé is a fan) to Greek, Korean and Vietnamese. Onetime undocumented immigrant Hugo Ortega won the 2017 James Beard Foundation’s Best Chef: Southwest award for Hugo’s, serving Mexican favorites made from scratch. Xochi, honoring Mexico’s Oaxaca region, is his newest eatery.
Area tourist draws include the Garden of the Gods Park with its red rock formations and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, which climbs to the 14,115-foot summit offering views that inspired “America the Beautiful.” Colorado Springs is home to the Broadmoor, a Forbes Travel Guide five-star and AAA five-diamond resort, marking its 100th anniversary in 2018. Visitors can stay there in style or just tour its beautifully landscaped grounds, have a bite at its inviting restaurants, book a massage in the spa or take a spin on zip lines. The Broadmoor boasts three golf courses and hosts the 2018 Senior Open on June 28 to July 1.
First off, if you want to have access to the crown/top of the Statue of Liberty you need to reserve the Crown Ticket 2 to 4 months in advance on their website. AKA Hotels have several places to stay around the city. Large suites are good for families and many have kitchens. The top sights of NYC are spread around the city so there is no “best area to stay for families” – instead be sure you’re close to a subway stop. Kids under 45 inches/112 cm tall are free on the NYC subway. For everyone else get the $32 7-day unlimited travel card (if you’re in NYC for more than 4 days). Most taxis will only fit four. Instead, get the Uber or Lyft apps and use their services to get around the city (when you don’t use the subway). You’ll need at least 3 full days to see the top sites but could easily fill a week in NYC with not-stop sightseeing.
Located on the southern edge of Lake Erie is chilled-out Sandusky. This place is home to the Cedar Point amusement park, which draws rollercoaster-crazy visitors each year. It’s mostly for the thrill-seekers, but there are also gentler options available for younger children. Alternatively, you can take jet skis out on the lake or enjoy a stroll with stunning views along the Sandusky Bay Pathway.

Tokyo Disney Resort is fully owned and operated by The Oriental Land Company and is licensed by The Walt Disney Company. You could travel the world and never find anything like this: A temple mound in a quaint shopping district. Created by prehistoric Indians around 800 A.D., the mound is part of a fascinating museum complex showcasing more than 4,000 stone, bone, shell and clay pieces created as many as 10,000 years ago. In a word: Wow. fwb.org/museums
Yes, baseball season begins in early April. You can get schedules of home games and order tickets at the web sites of the New York Yankees (nyyankees.com) or the New York Mets (nymets.com). If you want better seats than the team has available, check sites like Stubhub.com and Seatgeek.com, where season ticket holders often sell tickets for games they cannot attend. When the teams are playing out of town, both stadiums offer behind-the-scenes tours, with the chance to visit locker rooms and dugouts, see some of the expensive private boxes, and actually go on the field. Early in the month you can also see basketball and hockey in action. We are traveling to NYC on a 2 week roadtrip with 4 kids. I have read some places that it is better to stay in NJ and take public transportation into the city. Would you advise? Can you recommend a good budget friendly hotel on the NJ side that is easy access to NYC. We plan to spend all of our time going to the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Central Park are our “must-sees”. Any help? Thanks in advance! Ashley
Located in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, Mammoth is a popular ski area in winter and an ideal summer destination. Hiking, from easy to challenging, attracts visitors who seek out waterfalls and scenic views. Mountain biking is another way to experience the peaks, from beginner-friendly to more rugged routes. This year, pedal assist e-bikes will be permitted in Mammoth Bike Park, making the trails accessible to even more riders. Or just relax and take in the views from the gondola as you ride to the summit at 11,000 feet. As a spectator or participant, the June Lake Triathlon on July 7 will be a memorable event. Camping, fly fishing, boating, playing golf at Sierra Star Golf Course, at a full mile and a half above sea level, or just breathing in clean, cool mountain air make a visit to Mammoth Lakes a great summer trip. Consider a stay at the Westin Monache Resort with a heated pool and plenty of activities for the kids.
Located about an hour north of Pensacola, right on the Alabama line, sits the small town of Century, previously known as the village of “Teaspoon.” An old timber mill, retired railroads, and other preserved sites keep the memories alive of a Southern mill town that was built on the hope for a successful, lasting settlement that would exist long beyond the economically booming years of the timber mill. In the heart of century lies the James Houston Jones Historic Park, home to three museums operated by the Alger-Sullivan Historical Society, which are free of charge and open to the public. Starting with the Leach House, explore the everyday life of century natives at the turn of the 20th century in the original Leach home place. Next, take a tour of the boxcar museum, which features actual railcars, parts, pictures, and maps that demonstrate countless miles of travel throughout the southeast dating back to the 1800s. Lastly, stop by the 1913 post office museum, a dedication to memorabilia from the old mill, past post offices, and other sites that played a huge role in Century’s development. After the tour, books written by members of the historical society allow you to continue your journey through time as you learn about how one small piece of the South endured through a changing industry, as well as other obstacles of that time period. These books are available for your viewing on-site or for purchase. One of Escambia County’s best-kept secrets, a day-trip to Century is a great way to expand your knowledge of our Gulf Coast history. For available hours, call the society President, Jerry Fischer, at 850-256-3980
The land where Walt Disney World resides is part of the Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID), a governing jurisdiction created in 1967 by the State of Florida at the request of Disney. RCID provides 911 services, fire, environmental protection, building code enforcement, utilities and road maintenance but does not provide law enforcement services. The approximately 800 security staff are instead considered employees of the Walt Disney Company. Arrests and citations are issued by the Florida Highway Patrol along with the Orange County and Osceola County sheriffs deputies who patrol the roads. Disney security does maintain a fleet of security vans equipped with flares, traffic cones, and chalk commonly used by police officers. These security personnel are charged with traffic control by the RCID and may only issue personnel violation notices to Disney and RCID employees, not the general public.
In November 2009, Disney received approval from the central government of China to build a Disney theme park, Shanghai Disneyland Park, in Shanghai’s Pudong district. “China is one of the most dynamic, exciting and important countries in the world and this approval marks a very significant milestone for Walt Disney Co in mainland China,” said Robert Iger, president and CEO of Disney. The resort opened on June 16, 2016. A groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 7, 2011.

People often postpone trip planning because it’s difficult to decide where to go and what to do. Browse our ideas by month section which includes suggestions for every month of the year as well as Valentine’s Day, Mothers & Fathers Days, fall foliage trips, 4th of July events and other trip ideas for families and couples.

Designed to supplement Disneyland in Anaheim, California, which had opened in 1955, the complex was developed by Walt Disney in the 1960s. “The Florida Project”, as it was known, was intended to present a distinct vision with its own diverse set of attractions. Walt Disney’s original plans also called for the inclusion of an “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow” (EPCOT), a planned community intended to serve as a test bed for new city living innovations. After extensive lobbying, the government of Florida created the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a special government district that essentially gave The Walt Disney Company the standard powers and autonomy of an incorporated city. Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, during construction of the complex. Without Disney spearheading the construction, the company created a resort similar to Disneyland, abandoning experimental concepts for a planned community. Magic Kingdom was the first theme park to open in the complex, in 1971, followed by Epcot in 1982, Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 1989, and the most recent, Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 1998.
