Disneyland expanded in 1972 with a seventh themed land, Bear Country, replacing the Indian Village of Frontierland, and later renamed Critter Country. In 1979, the Disneyland crafts and maintenance union workers went on strike for 15 days, at first rejecting and then accepting the park’s contract. Space Mountain opens at Disneyland in 1977.
With the June 3, 1980, retirement of Donn Tatum as Walt Disney Productions’ Chairman and CEO, three divisions were formed, including the Walt Disney Outdoor Recreation Division, of which Nunis was named division president.[CDW0 6] Disneyland started using Disney Dollars on May 5, 1987,[CDL4 1] while Walt Disney World parks started with Epcot on October 2.[CDW1 1] A renegotiated Disneyland Japan royalty agreement in April 1988 by Chief Financial Officer Gary L. Wilson netted Disney US$723 million in cash in exchange for lower royalty payments.[CDW0 7]
While most tourists come to the Sunshine State to get away from the snow and indulge in the beautiful sandy beaches, there’s actually more to Florida than just our infinite sunny days. With endless history, some of the best-kept secrets are the spots that many seem to skip over altogether. So next time the clouds open up and the rain starts falling, escape the present and enjoy the past with some of these must-see museums around Florida.
Eataly is great. And I highly recommend it for kids and families. It’s big and loud and has lots of great food and treats. There are 7 sit down restaurants with a variety of table and bar seats. Every restaurant (except Baita on the roof) is situated next to the market area that provides its fresh ingredients. The trouble is getting a seat as only Manzo takes reservations. Try off-peak hours like late lunch or early dinner. The Nutella bar with waffles, crepes, gelato, and nutella lattes is wonderful.
Construction on Hong Kong Disneyland began on January 12, 2003, then opened September 12, 2005.[CDC 16] Groundbreaking occurred at Hong Kong Disneyland in December 2009 for a three land expansion: Mystic Point, Grizzly Gulch, and Toy Story Land.[CDC 17]
Yellowstone is a massive, nearly 4,000-square-mile park that hosts more geothermal features, including hot springs, mud spots and geysers, than anywhere else on Earth. Here you can be mesmerized by most famous, Old Faithful, which shoots steam as high as 185 feet into the sky every 90 minutes, along with many other lesser-known geysers, mud pots and brilliant multi-colored hot springs like Grand Prismatic Spring, named for its striking array of colors that match the rainbow dispersion of white light by an optical prism of orange, yellow, red, green and blue. The park is also famous for its wildlife, with an abundance of bison, elk and Bighorn sheep, along with wolves and bears. By staying just outside the park, you’ll find multiple budget-friendly options, like Kelly Inn West Yellowstone.
Change is afoot in town, too: There are new tasting rooms from Barons, Bledsoe Family, and Nocking Point, and a historic building is set to open as the Penrose Walla Walla Hotel & Spa next year. —Christopher Tkaczyk

Much of Walt Disney’s plans for his Progress City were abandoned after his death and after the company board decided that it did not want to be in the business of running a city. The concept evolved into the resort’s second theme park, EPCOT Center, which opened in 1982 (renamed EPCOT in 1996). While still emulating Walt Disney’s original idea of showcasing new technology, the park is closer to a world’s fair than a “community of tomorrow”. One of EPCOT’s main attractions is their world’s showcase which highlights 11 countries across the globe. Some of the urban planning concepts from the original idea of EPCOT would instead be integrated into the community of Celebration much later. The resort’s third theme park, Disney-MGM Studios (renamed Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2008), opened in 1989 and is inspired by show business. The resort’s fourth theme park, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, opened in 1998.
The resort’s tropical gardens, saltwater lagoons and two golf courses are tempting, but the most popular retreat is Dolphin Quest. It provides guests with a variety of interactive dolphin programs, including training adventures, a family experience and kids’ quest. Meanwhile, at Waikoloa’s 4-acre lagoon, water lovers can schedule kayak trips, snorkel sails and seasonal whale-watching tours. After dark, attend the Legends of Hawaii luau to experience traditional island dancing and music, as well as a buffet dinner.
The Inn at Palmetto Bluff gets rave reviews for its quintessentially Southern combo of coziness and luxury. Families love feeling like they can slow waaaay down and stay put (if only for a school vacation) in one of the resort’s rooms, suites, cottages, or village homes: many with riverfront views. With 20,000 acres to play on, everyone from preschoolers to grandparents can engage in low-country activities like fly-fishing, bird-watching, and naturalist-led alligator “hunts.” For the more adventurous, there’s horseback riding, paddleboarding, and swimming. But the most remarked-upon feature of this resort is the opportunity to stay in expansive private cottages with screened-in porches. Consider this the ideal site for sitting in a rocker with a Mint Julep (locals call it “porching”) and luxuriating in the moment.
Located in Key West, this museum offers literary enthusiasts the chance to explore the residence where Hemingway lived in 1931 and later died in 8 years later. As a bonus, observe the descendants of his former cats that still roam the area.
This is the family-friendliest pick of the of the three Iberostar resorts on Montego Bay, with a kids’ club, water park, kids’ menus, and pull-out sofas in every room. The rooms are large enough to share with the kids, and the resort offers an awesome kids’ club with a water park, as well as a lazy river, an activities pool, and best of all, a rockin’ kids’ club with a water park, video game center, playground, pool, and arts and crafts. All-inclusive rates cover meals and drinks at the property’s six restaurants and six bars. Lucy’s Kids Club is free for kids ages four to 12, and has a (literally) cool water park, with a playground pool showered by fountains and a giant bucket that sprinkles water over the children as they play on slides and bridges. Babysitting is available for a fee.
Today, Walt Disney World is the most visited vacation resort in the world, with an average annual attendance of over 52 million. The resort is the flagship destination of Disney’s worldwide corporate enterprise, and has become a popular staple in American culture.
A Star Wars-themed section of Legoland California’s Miniland USA opened in 2011, with a similar version opening at Legoland Florida in November 2012, just weeks after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise.
Charlotte’s Carowinds, a combination amusement park and waterpark, is a big hit with families. Weekdays offer shorter lines than weekends, and themed events are scheduled near year’s end. Young park-goers will discover mini-rides just for them, while teens will be thrilled with the likes of Intimidator and Fury 325. The park offers free water at multiple stations, but parents consistently recommend purchasing cups with free refills for the day. Count on $20 for parking, and budget extra for food, or consider at least one combo ticket, which includes food throughout the day.

Hi there. Thank you for taking the time to provide so much information and answer questions. My husband and I have never visited NYC. We wanted to plan a trip with our 3 children (ages 5, 10, 15). We have no idea where to stay that’s best for families and families our size; especially with the differences in ages. The more I research, the more nervous I get about navigating the crowds, subways, etc with 3 kids to see all of the famous sites.
Travel to beautiful Punta Cana and stay at Ocean Blue and Sand! Ideal for your next family getaway, your young travelers will love the bowling alley. The club for teens comes complete with Nintendo Wii stations, non-alcoholic beverages bar, and more.
One of three beachside Marriott resorts sitting in a row on the sand, the family-oriented Surf Club has clean, comfortable rooms, an excellent gym, a huge waterslide, a teen lounge with Nintendo Wii video games, and the winding “Lazy River” pool (possibly the best pool in Aruba). Beside the Lazy River pool, the hotel has a huge waterslide. In addition, the hotel has a teen lounge off the lobby for 12- to-17-year-olds. On-site dining is limited, but excellent restaurants are just a short walk away.
Located downtown, Historic Pensacola Village includes 27 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Eleven historic homes and sites are open to the public, including the Lavalle House (1805), the Dorr House (1871), Lear/Rocheblave House (1890) and Old Christ Church (1832), one of Florida’s oldest surviving church buildings. Visitors can explore them all to get a sense of local life in the 18th and 19th centuries and encounter a wide range of architectural styles – French Creole, Victorian, Greek Revival and more. Tours can be self-guided or taken with costumed staff who bring local history to life through reenactments, demonstrations and audience participation activities, such as butter churning, woodworking and candle making. It’s a fascinating way to experience various periods of local history, from the early Colonial era through World War II.
One way to save on theater tickets is to join Theatermania, Broadway Box, or Playbill online. These discount ticket services offer good savings on a long list of shows, all but the few sold-out offerings. Joining is free, you pay with a credit card, and pick up your tickets at the box office before the performance. Often you can see a seating chart and choose your seats. You do have to add a service fee if you order online, but the saving is still substantial and you have a wide choice of plays.
The massive Hawks Cay Resort is packed with tasteful rooms and family-friendly amenities. The Florida resort is not within Orlando city limits but is southwest of Downtown Orlando. Much of the resort is in southwestern Orange County, with the remainder in adjacent Osceola County. The property includes the cities of Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake which are governed by the Reedy Creek Improvement District. At its founding, the resort occupied approximately 30,500 acres (48 sq mi; 123 km2). Originally, the company was known as Walt Disney Outdoor Recreation Division and later as Walt Disney Attractions. The chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts was Bob Chapek, formerly president of Disney Consumer Products. Chapek reports to Disney CEO Bob Iger. In 2016, the company’s theme parks hosted over 140.4 million guests, making Disney Parks the world’s most visited theme park company worldwide, with United Kingdom based Merlin Entertainments coming in second. It is by far Disney’s largest business segment according to employee headcount, with approximately 130,000 of the company’s 180,000 employees as of 2015. In March 2018, Parks and Resorts was merged with Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media to form Walt Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products.
You can mix and match visits, use them in any order, or even use more than one in one day. Each admission or golf round counts as one visit taken off your total, even if you go on the same day. There is no “hopping” privilege for the attractions included in this add-on. You do get “in and out” privileges at the two water parks, so you can go to Blizzard Beach in the morning, go back to your hotel, and come back in the evening, and it only uses one visit off your ticket. If you go to Blizzard Beach in the morning and Typhoon Lagoon in the evening, though, that would deduct two visits.

The Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Palace should be on every visitor’s agenda as well. Wimbledon, London’s prestigious tennis tournament, begins on July 2 for two weeks of world class tennis and tradition, including the time-honored strawberries and cream. “Funny and entertaining! Had a great driver/guide who was full of odd facts and opinions about various areas, events and structures in Boston. Provided commentary that assisted and enhanced both the educational and entertainment value of the tour. Also had a perfect sunny autumn day for the tour so that was great as well.” — TripAdvisor Reviewer

We have a very active 7 year old child and need a kid-friendly hotel near a good Manhattan playground. Not picky about neighborhood – any safe, reasonably central area with a subway station will do. But if it were a cool neighborhood then that’s even better. Budget not a concern. Thanks, Jay.
Rockcliffe Hall is a five-star golf and spa resort that also welcomes children. There are generous dedicated times at the swimming pool for young people, plus cycling and falconry. Look out for the Alice in Wonderland-themed play cabins, adventure playground and seasonal nature trail. The much-anticipated Mischmasch gardens opens in spring 2018.
