After you’ve had your fill of the forest, head northwest to the shores of Lake Erie, where you can swim, boat, and picnic at one of many lakefront state parks. These include Catawba Island, Kelleys Island, and East Harbor. For manmade thrills, ride the 17 world-famous roller coasters at Cedar Point, an amusement park of mythic proportions. 
The primary law enforcement agency in the township is the Piscataway Police Department.[109] Rutgers University Police Department operates on its campuses within Piscataway. The New Jersey State Police patrols the section of Interstate 287 that bisects the town.
Other highlights nearby include Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore—where sand dunes as high as 450 feet tower next to the water—and picture-perfect Mackinac Island. This roughly 4-square-mile speck in Lake Huron charms visitors with its colorful 19th-century architecture and quiet streets where cars are banned. Most of the island is verdant parkland, however; its best-known natural landmark is Arch Rock, a limestone formation arcing 150 feet above the shoreline. A trip to the island wouldn’t be complete without stopping at one of the many fudge shops. An island staple since the 1800s, the candy is still made using the technique of “paddling” hot, chocolatey liquid on marble slabs until it cools.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a more outdoorsy city than Boulder, where the cool mountain air becomes especially inviting during the summer. This place has perfected the balance between the cosmopolitan and the rugged: The Boulder Contemporary Art Museum, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Boulder Ballet coexist with over 300 miles of hiking and biking trails, including the Boulder Creek Path, which runs directly through the city.
Located just 30 miles from Boston, the quiet New England hamlet of Essex is ideally situated for fun on the water, given its proximity to both the Essex River and Essex Bay. Kayaking, boating, deep-sea fishing, and sunbathing on beaches are all appealing options. Those waterways have also played a huge role in shaping the town’s history; it’s known for Essex clams and a rich tradition of shipbuilding. You can learn all about that craft at the town’s shipbuilding museum, which showcases the beautiful wooden vessels that were Essex’s specialty in the past. And speaking of the past, Essex is home to more than 25 antique shops, where you can pick up everything from nautical knickknacks to early American furnishings. Sunset boat cruises narrated by local guides make a nice capper to the day. 
Named the “Restaurant City of the Year” by Bon Appétit, Chicago is a hot destination for foodies. Must-eats include the Au Cheval burger — which is frequently named among the best burgers in the country— deep dish from any number of the city’s institutions like Lou Malnati’s or Pequod’s, and anything from Alinea, which is considered one of the best restaurants in the country. The city also saw the opening of the first-ever Nutella Café this year.

Head to the charming waterfront town of Traverse City to sample the output of numerous cherry orchards, wineries, and farm-to-table restaurants, particularly on the Old Mission Peninsula, a finger of land where you can end your day watching the sunset from a quaint lighthouse. 
The windy city is a cornucopia of modern art, fine dining, cutting edge comedy, and die-hard sports fans. Snap a photo of your reflection in the silver Cloud Gate sculpture at Millennium Park before heading to Grant Park to get hit with the refreshing spray of Buckingham Fountain. There are dozens of museums and theater companies in Chicago, so a cultural experience is never hard to find. Since the opening in 1960 of Interstate Highway 287, the township has proven a highly desirable location for suburban development and many Fortune 500 companies are located in the township. The township’s prime location with easy access to the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, Routes 287, 78, 22, 27, and 18 make it especially attractive to commuters and corporations alike. Despite the township’s growth, Piscataway has maintained its friendly welcoming atmosphere, making it a wonderful place to live, work and play.
Don’t miss hiking along Ithaca’s famous gorges. Popular options include Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls, and the particularly spectacular Treman State Park. These trails are closed from November to April due to icy conditions, but in the warmer months they offer shady trails, dramatic vistas, and (very chilly!) swimming holes.
Shuffle off to Buffalo for some affordable activities, say T+L readers. Get your bearings at the Art Deco city hall, where the 28th floor observation deck is open to the public and offers the best vantage point in town. Next, stroll the mural-lined streets of Allentown, a historic neighborhood north of downtown now famous for its ever-expanding collection of street art. Along the spruced up waterfront, the new Canalside district comes alive with free concerts and festivals in the summer. Only slightly further afield — just 25 minutes west on I-90 — natural wonders await at Niagara Falls State Park. The oldest state park in the country, it has some of the best views of the massive falls.

This is as green as it gets in Texas. The Hill Country between San Antonio and Austin is a rolling landscape dotted with pecan orchards, wildflowers, wineries, and B&Bs. Piscataway is served by a number of roads. County roads include CR 501 (along the border with South Plainfield), CR 514 and CR 529. Route 18 currently ends at Hoes Lane, with plans to extend to Interstate 287. Interstate 287 passes through the center of the township for about 4 miles.
MidCoast Maine is a collection of small towns and islands and is a wonderful place for a family vacation. The region, just off of US-1 (the heavily traveled route between Portland and Acadia National Park), simply has it all: excellent food; abundance of outdoor activities; arts and culture; and jaw-dropping scenery.
For a typically Texas experience, go to Luchenbach, one of the oldest and smallest settlements in Gillespie County. The live music here, not to mention the barbecue-heavy chuckwagon dinner, takes place in a virtually untouched one-horse frontier town.

Seeing the Redwoods at the top of the list is what inspired me to write this article. I admit that we fell in love with the redwood forests during our Seattle to Disneyland road trip many years ago. It was on a recent trip to California where I was able to revisit these majestic trees that clinched their place in my heart as one of my favorite spots in the United States.

I think many of us know that we need to take vacations. They’re opportunities to reset and recharge, plus family vacations are a great opportunity to reconnect as a family. The next hurdle is then wondering where should I go on vacation? The lovely folks at Lonely Planet recently released their picks for the best places to visit in 2018. I’m taking their list to come up with family vacation ideas with the help of some of my family travel writing friends.
To get to Block Island, you can take a ferry from Newport, Rhode Island or Fall River, Massachusetts. Don’t worry about bringing your car—many people get around just fine on bicycles and mopeds, which can be rented on the island. A more adventurous option is to go by boat and park it at a mooring. Be sure to stop in at The Oar, a casual bayside eatery named for the hundreds of personalized paddles decorating the interior. The restaurant’s mudslides are famous. 
While we do recommend a visit to the Chattanooga Choo-Choo Hotel during the day, The Chattanoogan remains our favorite overnight accommodation. You’ll find spacious rooms, an inviting lobby, and the perfect heated, indoor pool offering views over the neighborhood.
The community is ethnically diverse with 24,642 White, 10,254 Black, 104 Native Americans, 12,532 Asian, 1,397 Multi-racial, 4,002 Hispanic (of any race), and 1,553 other. The township has a fair percentage of apartments, townhouses, and condominiums although most housing accommodations are single-family dwellings. The township was named by MONEY magazine in 2008, 2010 and 2014 as one of the best places to live in the United States. Cited was the long and prestigious history of the community and noted also was that 189 buildings on Rutgers the State University campuses are located in Piscataway. RWJ Medical School, several data centers, and many national and international companies providing professional, scientific, and technical services are located in the township. The township has a highly educated workforce; 93.5 percent are high school graduates or higher.
