Keeping them occupied requires more than a few PlayStations. Are there lots of opportunity for play, supervised activities or bikes to borrow? Is the pool family-friendly, the beach perfect for paddling? We love a kids’ club that embraces local culture, with educational pizza-making, bug safaris or language lessons.

Quirky and delightful, Augill Castle is located in the lovely Eden Valley between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. With the trappings of a neo-Gothic castle — tower, turrets, castellations and mullions — but in miniature, it appeals equally to children as to adults, and you’d be hard pressed to find a more family-friendly castle, with a tree house, playground and tennis court in its 15-acre grounds, and inside, a 12-seater cinema, not to mention the popular children’s cookery school. Families feel truly pampered at this Four Seasons island resort. The 600-square-foot standard rooms are some of the largest in Hawaii, and are as safe and comfortable as they are luxurious (you can request safety netting for balconies, beach gear, and high chairs, all at no extra charge). The knowledgeable concierges provide guidance about family-friendly activities like snorkeling and outrigger canoe excursions, as well as adult adventures such as scuba diving. They can also help arrange tropical family picnics or set up a whale-watching expedition by catamaran. There’s even a complimentary kids program with unique island activities ( gecko hunts, Hula lessons, Hawaiian bowling, and visits with Ricky and Lucy, the resort’s parrot mascot).

The whole family can come together for the Klondike Festival (with sled-dog presentations) and the Midnight Sun Party (an all-ages gathering on the top deck under the Midnight Sun). Excursions include visiting a gold mine and watching a lumberjack competition. Princess has even teamed up with the Discovery Channel to present adventures tied to the popular Deadliest Catch franchise.

In 1990, the possibility of a West Coast version of Epcot Center was placed in development.[CDC 4] This was announced as WestCOT in 1991, to be placed at the Disneyland Resort.[17] On July 31, 1990, a new 350-acre (140 ha) ocean-themed park and resort, Port Disney, was announced for Long Beach. Port was to have a cruise-ship terminal, five hotels, restaurants, and shopping area, costing $2 billion to build.[CDC 5] On December 12, 1991, Disney selected only one California project to go forward with, Disneyland Resort, which was to include the WestCOT Center, hotels, a shopping mall and a lake. [CDL5 1] Port Disney was abandoned in March 1992, and Disney canceled its leases on the Queen Mary and Spruce Goose attractions picked up from the Wrather Corporation.[CDC 6] Mickey’s Toontown, a new themed land at Disneyland, opened on January 24, 1993.[CDL5 2] Disney canceled its plans for WestCOT in mid-1995 due to financial issues at Disneyland Paris and the park’s projected high cost. That park was then replaced by plans for the California Adventure park, hotels and a retail district.[30]

With the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as Disney Pictures’ top franchise,[100] the company had been looking for additional projects in this category for a decade.[105] Disney Pictures took another push at additional adaptations in the 2010s.[105] By November 2010, Jon Favreau had been tapped to develop the Magic Kingdom park into a “Night at the Museum” like film, with Strike Entertainment signed on to produce it[106] after a script by Ronald D. Moore was turned down.[107] Another Haunted Mansion film was in the works with Guillermo del Toro as of August 2012.[105] Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride ride film was in the works at Disney Pictures by January 2013.[108] Tomorrowland, first to be loosely based on a theme park area,[109] was announced in January 2013 for a December 2014 release.[105] Also in 2013, American Broadcasting Company had ordered a pilot based on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.[110] It’s A Small World was added to the list of known projects in April 2014.[111] Tower of Terror was given a theatrical treatment by John August under producer Jim Whitaker in October 2015, while the long-in-production Jungle Cruise gained an actor.[110]
Once a sleepy second fiddle to Southern culinary powerhouses like Charleston and Nashville, Greenville is stepping into the limelight with hot new restaurants. The town will soon be home to an outpost of Sean Brock’s heirloom-crop-focused Husk and a food-centric market hall called the Commons. Other recent additions include modern Italian spot Jianna from Michael Kramer (the opening executive chef of McCrady’s in Charleston, pre-Brock) and the moody speakeasy lounge Vault & Vator. It’s an impressive collection of quality restaurants for a city of just over 67,000.
This Four Seasons sits on a large, attractive beach on the small island of Nevis. The gorgeous rooms here may be the highlight; the updated decor has a Ralph Lauren-like look, with a blue-and-yellow scheme accented by pops of color and dark wood furniture; the massive bathrooms feature separate showers and tubs. Plus, almost all rooms have beautiful views, of either mountains or the ocean. The hotel’s remote location makes this a popular pick for couples on a romantic getaway. But with its long list of on-site amenities, this resort is well-suited for families as well. There are three pools, multiple tennis courts, a golf course, and a kids’ club. Other family features include child-size bathrobes, milk and cookies upon arrival (as well as a plush turtle toy and a turtle treat made by the resort’s pastry chef), a free-form infinity pool for families, baby-proofing kits upon request, 17 family suites, and DVD player in all rooms.
Until now, Zambia has had little recognition as one of Africa’s great safari destinations. Yet experts know it as the birthplace of the walking safari — as well as the home of some of the most highly trained guides on the continent. In South Luangwa National Park, visitors can expect to see more animals than baobab trees, while Liuwa Plain National Park is the setting for the world’s second-largest wildebeest migration, when tens of thousands of the creatures head across the plain from neighboring Angola. Last year saw the arrival of Liuwa’s first permanent camp: King Lewanika Lodge, a six-villa safari lodge overlooking a watering hole where hyenas and antelope gather. —Mary Holland
New York is busy around the holidays so be prepared for long lines at the most popular attractions – especially Christmas or winter related ones. Eg. The skating rink at Rockefeller Center can have insane lineups. Taxis can be better at times and subway can be better at times – it depends where you’re going (e.g. often going east/west can be faster by taxi as there won’t be a direct subway line). The cost for a family of 4 is often not the deciding factor as 4 tickets on the subway will be just as much as a taxi. That said, Uber is way better than a typical taxi so use it when you don’t want to take the subway.
In 1959, Walt Disney Productions began looking for land to house a second resort to supplement Disneyland in Anaheim, California, which had opened in 1955. Market surveys at the time revealed that only 5% of Disneyland’s visitors came from east of the Mississippi River, where 75% of the population of the United States lived. Additionally, Walt Disney disliked the businesses that had sprung up around Disneyland and wanted more control over a larger area of land in the next project.[4]

Many mature travelers have taken Glacier Bay cruises and toured majestic Denali National Park. But not so many know that Kodiak Island — reached by plane or ferry from Anchorage — is home to its own species of bear, and that guides can take you to watch them catch fish and play in their natural habitat. These are the world’s largest brown bears (some weigh more than 1,000 pounds). You can stay in rustic cabins with modern comforts and — like the bears — feast on freshly caught salmon. Best time for bears: July through September. Whale watch on Kodiak from April to November.
Beginning in 1958 with the contracting of Economics Research Associates (ERA) to find a location for another Disney resort, Disney Productions moved beyond a single park. ERA recommended Florida; another study in 1961 named Ocala or Orlando in Florida as possible locations. In November 1963, Walt Disney made a trip to Florida for final site selection.[CDW 1]:333, 334 In 1962, Disney Productions purchased Celebrity Sports Center (opened on September 17, 1960, in Denver, Colorado) from its owners, including Walt Disney, Art Linkletter, and John Payne, to use as a staff training center for its second resort.[14] In 1963, Roy made plans to buy from 5,000 to 10,000 acres (2,000 to 4,000 ha), which was carried out in 1964, amassing 27,443 acres (11,106 ha) by October 1965.[CDW 2][CDW 3] Plans for the Florida project that would eventually become Walt Disney World were announced to the public in November 1965.[CDW 3] Legislation forming the Reedy Creek Improvement District was signed into law by Florida Governor Claude R. Kirk, Jr. on May 12, 1967, allowing Disney to build the infrastructure for the second park.[CDW 4] Ground breaking followed for the future Reedy Creek park on May 30.[CDW 5] In Roy O. Disney’s last act as CEO in 1968, he officially named the second park Walt Disney World.[CDW 1]:357
The Park Hopper Plus option adds visits equal to the number of park days on the ticket, except for the 1-day ticket, which includes 2 visits. A 2-day ticket has both 2 days of major park admission and 2 visits, a 3-day ticket has both 3 days of major park admission and 3 visits, and so forth. This is an incentive to buy the longer passes, so that you’ll get more visits for your money.

A Family Zion & Bryce Hiking adventure begins in Bryce Canyon National Park, where you’ll hike to the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The Staircase is actually a set of plateaus that lead to Lower Calf Creek Falls, where a green oasis has formed around the falling water. This is a great place to see Native American pictographs and granaries and learn about their culture. As you hike on to Zion National Park, you’ll see “hoodoos,” bright red, orange and white spires, some of which are over 200 feet tall. Legend says they were formed when ancient people behaved badly, drawing down a curse that turned them into stones. Take a refreshing dip in the Virgin River, and hike The Narrows, a stretch along the river considered one of the best hikes in the country.

The capital may be set on banks of the Potomac, but it’s never had a reputation as a great waterfront city. That could all be about to change, thanks to the $2.5 billion, 24-acre District Wharf, which opened in October just south of the National Mall. The shiny new InterContinental Washington D.C.-The Wharf offers access to the development’s new parks, music venues, 50-plus shops, and 20 restaurants — which include projects from area chefs like Fabio Trabocchi, Mike Isabella, and wunderkind Kwame Onwuachi. This is also set to be a banner year for culture: the Freer and Sackler galleries, sister museums that champion Asian art, recently reopened after a 20-month renovation, the National Gallery of Art will host the first-ever show dedicated to Cézanne’s portraits from March to July, and the Kennedy Center continues its inaugural season of hip-hop programming curated by Q-Tip. —Brooke Porter Katz
Wind in the Willows author Kenneth Grahame used to stay at this Victorian seaside mansion when it was a private home and would approve of its reincarnation as a luxury family hotel. It has top-notch facilities for children including a crèche and indoor pool, while grown-up facilities include a spa and fine dining. Children receive two free hours per day at the crèche, a night-time baby listening service so parents can dine alone. There’s plenty for older children, including a zipwire and trampoline as well as watersports and the run of the beautiful grounds. Read expert review
In addition to more than 100,000 artifacts, including pieces currently stored in the vaults of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the new museum will sport a Modernist design courtesy of Heneghan Peng Architects. Chosen from more than 1,550 design proposals from architects in 82 countries, the final building will echo both the geography of the plateau on which it rests as well as the Pyramids themselves. When the museum partially opens in 2018, visitors in the immense atrium can soak in the majestic sight of both the Pyramid of Menkaure and the Great Pyramid of Khufu from a floor-to-ceiling glass wall. —Diana Hubbell
Both Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris Resort have room for future expansion.[87] Disney has made announcements regarding plans for another American theme park and CEO Robert Iger frequently has cited international expansion as one of the company’s three strategic priorities.[88]
