The district soon began construction of drainage canals, and Disney built the first roads and the Magic Kingdom. The Contemporary Resort Hotel and Polynesian Village were also completed in time for the park’s opening on October 1, 1971.[10][11] The Palm and Magnolia golf courses near Magic Kingdom had opened a few weeks before, while Fort Wilderness opened a month later. 24 days after the park opened, Roy O. Disney dedicated the property and declared that it would be known as “Walt Disney World” in his brother’s honor. In his own words: “Everyone has heard of Ford cars. But have they all heard of Henry Ford, who started it all? Walt Disney World is in memory of the man who started it all, so people will know his name as long as Walt Disney World is here.” After the dedication, Roy Disney asked Walt’s widow, Lillian, what she thought of Walt Disney World. According to biographer Bob Thomas, she responded, “I think Walt would have approved.” Roy Disney died at age 78 on December 20, 1971, less than three months after the property opened.[12]
At the Inn at Palmetto Bluff, in South Carolina, guests can drop the kids off at camp knowing that they’ll have a blast hunting for treasure, building pirate boats, and crabbing. Then the grownups can book a Couples Elopement package at the spa, paddle a canoe under centuries-old oak trees draped in Spanish moss, or kick back with a mint julep on the porch of their private cottage. The only tough decision you should have to make on your family vacation is whether to come back year after year, or try all of these 25 amazing properties.
Leaf-peeping and a thriving farm-to-table food scene (the country’s first CSA sprouted here) lure out-of-towners to the bucolic far western corner of Massachusetts. But the arts have long been their own major draw: Tanglewood, the Clark Art Institute, and the Williamstown Theatre Festival all call the area home, as does MASS MoCA, a popular modern art destination housed in a circa-1800s textile mill in North Adams.
California: California is often a favorite getaway for couples and families, home to sandy beaches, laid-back towns, great wine growing regions like Napa, Sonoma and Paso Robles, as well as leading universities, great museums and attractions.
TKTS is great for getting discounted tickets but it’s not so good at going to see a particular play. And that makes it hard to do with kids. Adults who just want to see a show (any show) can walk up and get good deals on a variety of shows (though usually not the most popular ones). But for families, already restricted by the limited number of kid-friendly shows, it’s harder to make it work. If seeing a show is important to you I would book directly with the theater for a specific kid-friendly performance.

Located about an hour north of Pensacola, right on the Alabama line, sits the small town of Century, previously known as the village of “Teaspoon.” An old timber mill, retired railroads, and other preserved sites keep the memories alive of a Southern mill town that was built on the hope for a successful, lasting settlement that would exist long beyond the economically booming years of the timber mill. In the heart of century lies the James Houston Jones Historic Park, home to three museums operated by the Alger-Sullivan Historical Society, which are free of charge and open to the public. Starting with the Leach House, explore the everyday life of century natives at the turn of the 20th century in the original Leach home place. Next, take a tour of the boxcar museum, which features actual railcars, parts, pictures, and maps that demonstrate countless miles of travel throughout the southeast dating back to the 1800s. Lastly, stop by the 1913 post office museum, a dedication to memorabilia from the old mill, past post offices, and other sites that played a huge role in Century’s development. After the tour, books written by members of the historical society allow you to continue your journey through time as you learn about how one small piece of the South endured through a changing industry, as well as other obstacles of that time period. These books are available for your viewing on-site or for purchase. One of Escambia County’s best-kept secrets, a day-trip to Century is a great way to expand your knowledge of our Gulf Coast history. For available hours, call the society President, Jerry Fischer, at 850-256-3980
“We wanted to spend time at the Grand Canyon so I looked for a place that could accommodate all 9 of us (this included some children). Rather than rent numerous hotel rooms I decided it might be fun to all stay together in a house. The description of this house made it sound interesting and close to town so we chose it. Best decision ever!” — TripAdvisor Reviewer
Lyme Regis’ answer to a boutique coastal break with children is this luxury hotel with lovely views of the bay and the surrounding Jurassic coastline. Opt for a sea view Poulett or Gould room to make the most of it. Nearly all of the 24 rooms can accommodate children, plus there are two apartments that can host families of four or six. From its perch overlooking spectacular Lyme Bay you get road-free access to the shore (borrow buckets and spades from the hotel). Outside is a play area with swings, climbing frames and trampolines; in poor weather, try seaside-themed mocktails and board games in the lounge. Read expert review
One of three beachside Marriott resorts sitting in a row on the sand, the family-oriented Surf Club has clean, comfortable rooms, an excellent gym, a huge waterslide, a teen lounge with Nintendo Wii video games, and the winding “Lazy River” pool (possibly the best pool in Aruba). Beside the Lazy River pool, the hotel has a huge waterslide. In addition, the hotel has a teen lounge off the lobby for 12- to-17-year-olds. On-site dining is limited, but excellent restaurants are just a short walk away.
1-day tickets are subject to price tiers: you have to pay a different price depending on the day of the year you are going, and whether it falls in Value, Regular or Peak season. Multi-day (2-day and longer) tickets are not currently subject to price tiers; days on a multi-day ticket can be used on any day of the year. Disney has announced that price tiers are coming for multi-day tickets, but we don’t yet know exactly how that will work.
An excellent spa and gym, beautiful double-decker pool, pristine beachfront, and numerous entertainment options make The Westin Dawn Beach Resort & Spa an excellent choice for adults and kids alike. An extensive list of activities include direct access to Dawn Beach (with guest-only lounge chairs and towel service), a beachfront water-sports pavilion with snorkeling gear, pool floats, kayaks, and other non-motorized sport rentals, and a Westin Kids’ Club with arts and crafts and day trips.
With young children, consider staying on the Upper West Side, where you can walk to playgrounds in Riverside Park and Central Park as well as two favorite family museums, the Children’s Museum of Manhattan and the American Museum of Natural History. Two choices for family suites are the Hotel Beacon and a budget option, the Milburn Hotel. Both include convenient kitchenettes in some units and offer access to good bus service on Broadway. Buses are a little slower way to get around town but a lot easier for small ones than dealing with subway stairs and noise. If you are using a stroller, the buses will lower a ramp to make boarding easier. Just avoid crowded rush hours.

Bedruthan has been looking after families for more than 60 years (its sister hotel, the Scarlet, down the hill at Mawgan Porth, is for adults only) and strikes an excellent balance between child-friendliness and grown-up entertainment. Children are superbly catered for: from play areas, baby carriers and babysitting to an outdoor wooden ship and the Wild Café for children’s meals, plus two hours’ free childcare per day and the Z-Club for over-eights, and an activities programme at busy times. Set in the Northern Catskills, where there’s lots of fresh air and space to run around, Durham makes a top family vacation base. Show your brood the best of the rural life on a tour with Farmer Frank of Hull-O Farms, where you’ll meet all sorts of friendly animals, including bunnies, piglets, and chicks. For something completely different, book day tickets for the Zoom Flume Water Park, where you can rent a cabana and spend the day crashing into the water via various high-speed slides.
With the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as Disney Pictures’ top franchise,[100] the company had been looking for additional projects in this category for a decade.[105] Disney Pictures took another push at additional adaptations in the 2010s.[105] By November 2010, Jon Favreau had been tapped to develop the Magic Kingdom park into a “Night at the Museum” like film, with Strike Entertainment signed on to produce it[106] after a script by Ronald D. Moore was turned down.[107] Another Haunted Mansion film was in the works with Guillermo del Toro as of August 2012.[105] Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride ride film was in the works at Disney Pictures by January 2013.[108] Tomorrowland, first to be loosely based on a theme park area,[109] was announced in January 2013 for a December 2014 release.[105] Also in 2013, American Broadcasting Company had ordered a pilot based on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.[110] It’s A Small World was added to the list of known projects in April 2014.[111] Tower of Terror was given a theatrical treatment by John August under producer Jim Whitaker in October 2015, while the long-in-production Jungle Cruise gained an actor.[110]
“We came to Gettysburg to visit history and were not disappointed. The house just made things very simple for us. Everything we needed was there. Great literature to assist us on our history tour. Migis Lodge feels like a well-kept secret — and that’s exactly why we love it. It offers a fantastic “Full American Plan” getaway option for families, with wonderfully styled and luxurious cabin accommodations, daily meals, and a number of activities and kids’ programs included. Kids can learn to water ski (included!), fish, swim, kayak and more on Sebago Lake, as well as enjoy special children’s activities and the Children’s Zoo in the evenings. Families will also love the Lobster Bakes and Island Cookouts.

For outdoorsy families, Montage Deer Valley is a breath of fresh air. After waking up to the sight of the Wasatch and Uinta mountains (all of the 154 rooms, 66 suites, and private residences have views of the peaks), guests can hit the slopes at the Deer Valley ski resort outside their front door. Come spring and summer, families can go on nature hikes, take fly-casting lessons, participate outdoor photography sessions, and take all-ages yoga classes. Refuel at one of the six restaurants—there are also bowling lanes and arcade games—and at a nightly S’mores gathering around the fire pit. The house-made marshmallows are served year-round, and during winter months, Olympic Ski Ambassador Shannon Bahrke joins the group to share stories. The resort’s resident celebrities, Monty the Bernese mountain dog and his puppy pal, Parker, are available for petting sessions and photo ops.
Break up a day at the beach with an outing to the Cayman Islands National Museum. The colonial-era building depicts the island’s natural and cultural history in 3-D displays, murals and videos. Or spy colorful blue iguanas at the Blue Iguana Recovery Program, located in the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park. A 90-minute guided tour is suitable for the entire family, and if grandma doesn’t share the kids’ fascination for lizards, she can always enjoy the native flora in the park instead.

We are often asked if you can buy, say, a 10-day Base Ticket and use it as a 5-day Hopper by visiting two parks per day. The answer is no. You can only enter one park per day with Magic Your Way Base Tickets (the gates will prevent you from entering another park on the same day with that ticket). You must buy the Park Hopper option if you want to go to more than one park per day.

Last summer, the museum expanded its artistic footprint by over 130,000 square feet, making it the largest contemporary art space in the country. The new Building 6 houses long-term installations by artists like James Turrell, Louise Bourgeois, and Jenny Holzer. Two new museums are still in the works for North Adams, both spearheaded by former Guggenheim director Thomas Krens. At the Global Contemporary Art Museum, curators will work directly with artists to acquire and commission site-specific pieces, while the Extreme Model Railroad & Contemporary Architecture Museum will showcase works by the likes of Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, all built in miniature as part of an elaborate model train system. Design is also top-of-mind at Tourists, a modern take on the roadside motel that’s set to open this summer. The resort — situated on 55 acres at the convergence of the Appalachian and Mohawk Trails — will have 48 rooms, each with floor-to-ceiling windows that put the focus on surrounding vistas. —Fiorella Valdesolo

  1. Scottsdale, Arizona is renowned for its luxurious resorts, including the Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, which offers an all-inclusive package. The package covers meals and accommodations for two guests, plus parking and a 20-percent discount at the spa. Kids can be added to the package for an additional fee. It also covers the resort fee. Of course, access to the hotel’s sparkling swimming pools and children’s club are also included in rates. If you want to get out and explore (not that you need to), consider booking an excursion with the concierge. Options include Jeep tours and trips to the Grand Canyon.

Eataly is great. And I highly recommend it for kids and families. It’s big and loud and has lots of great food and treats. There are 7 sit down restaurants with a variety of table and bar seats. Every restaurant (except Baita on the roof) is situated next to the market area that provides its fresh ingredients. The trouble is getting a seat as only Manzo takes reservations. Try off-peak hours like late lunch or early dinner. The Nutella bar with waffles, crepes, gelato, and nutella lattes is wonderful.
This Rocco Forte-designed hideaway features an entirely separate world of fun for children. At Verdùland, hotel mascot Verdù the hedgehog hosts lively themed activities focused on education (Sicilian history, mythology, gardening), arts and crafts (painting, pottery, dance, short-film making, a Verdura’s Got Talent competition), and food (learning to cook a range of globally inspired dishes in a tot-tailored kitchen), with beach trips in between. In short, it’s bliss for mini-Smiths.
Here’s the crucial bit: parents must feel they’re on holiday, too. Adults-only spa time, a romantic meal for two and decor that doesn’t scream ‘Wipe me!’ or ‘Don’t touch!’ all play a part in making the perfect family hotel.

  2. If you mean the Hilton Garden on 8th then yes, that’s a great central location and steps from a subway station. Be sure to get over to 9th Ave (Hell’s Kitchen) for some great non-touristy restaurants.

In early April 2016, this luxury coastal resort is unveiling its new Miraval Life in Balance Spa, which will offer many of the same pampering treatments as the original Arizona location but with a coastal flavor—like massages with sea salt, algae, and marine muds. Younger guests, meanwhile, can Zen out in age-appropriate meditation and yoga classes, or find their bliss in other family-oriented activities. The Ocean Explorers package includes four tickets for a whale watching cruise and a DIY kit for exploring the tide pools at the resort’s private beach. There are also stand up paddleboard lessons, trail hikes, and an outing with a Surf Butler. Families can take a day trip to the 230-year-old San Juan Capistrano mission for a trip back in time, or ex get up close and personal with marine life at the Ocean Institute.
We’ll be in New York for the weekend in early July 2015 and are planning our days as we don’t have much time and want to make the most of it. We’ve heard a lot about great desserts places with fun treats – if we can only visit one shop or restaurant which one would you go to?

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, officially Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Worldwide, Inc. and informally known as Disney Parks, was one of The Walt Disney Company’s four major business segments and a subsidiary.[1] The company was responsible for the conception, building, and managing of Disney theme parks and vacation resorts, as well as a variety of family-oriented leisure enterprises. It was founded in 1971, following the opening of Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Florida.

Disney expanded into attractions at the 1964 New York World’s Fair with It’s a Small World[18] and costumed character appearances. When the characters proved a hit at the 1964 World’s Fair, Walt wanted another outlet for “live” characters; thus, Disneyland put on Disney on Parade, a self-produced live arena show starting in 1969.[7][19] Small World and its famous song lasted two years at the fair; it was then moved to Disneyland as an expanded major attraction in 1966 and later duplicated in the other Disney theme parks.[18]
I am writing this from the AKA Times Square hotel and can whole-heartedly recommend it. They have 2-bedroom suite with full kitchen and washer dryer (and a large sofa in the living room). Great central location close to many different subway lines. Not the best area for interesting nightlife so may have to travel a little to find that (though there are several good places to get a drink nearby).

  4. It’s no secret that Fiji is home to some of the world’s most spectacular scenery — powdery beaches fringed with palms, crystalline waters with colorful reefs, and rugged coastlines covered in greenery. But the islands’ new crop of luxury accommodations is making a case for the archipelago’s man-made phenomena as well. At the exclusive, family-owned Kokomo Private Island Resort, which is spread across 140 acres of dense tropical rain forest and white-sand beaches, guests will have their pick of 21 beach villas (among the most spacious in Fiji) and four hilltop residences featuring infinity pools and walled tropical gardens. If you’re a diver, you’re in luck: the Great Astrolabe Reef, which is teeming with kaleidoscopic corals and exotic marine life (like reef sharks, rays, and dolphinfish), is in the resort’s backyard. The luxury ante will only be upped in March when a Six Senses debuts on Malolo Island. Set on a private beach, the boutique property will offer the brand’s namesake spa and wellness offerings (including yoga, meditation, and nutrition and sleep counseling), plus a restaurant with ingredients sourced from the resort garden. Also slated to open in 2018: Nihi Fiji, from hotelier James McBride and Christopher Burch — the same duo behind Nihi Sumba Island, which Travel + Leisure readers named the best hotel in the world for 2017. —Melanie Lieberman
The city of 100,000 that’s just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in western Virginia has been off tourists’ radar lately. But thanks to an influx of businesses, it has undergone a quiet renaissance. Disney reportedly had plans to build a park named Disney’s America. The park was to have been located in Haymarket, Virginia, but local opposition to the idea persuaded Disney to abandon the idea in 1994. On September 28, 1994, Michael Eisner announced that Disney was canceling its plans to build Disney’s America after a bruising national media fight with Protect Historic America and aggressive local opposition in Virginia from Protect Prince William and other citizen groups.
Wind in the Willows author Kenneth Grahame used to stay at this Victorian seaside mansion when it was a private home and would approve of its reincarnation as a luxury family hotel. It has top-notch facilities for children including a crèche and indoor pool, while grown-up facilities include a spa and fine dining. There’s plenty for older children, including a zipwire and trampoline as well as watersports and the run of the beautiful grounds. Read expert review
The Walt Disney World Resort, commonly known as Walt Disney World, or often just as Disney World, is an entertainment complex in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida, near Orlando and Kissimmee, Florida. Opened on October 1, 1971, the resort is owned and operated by Walt Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products, a division of The Walt Disney Company. It was initially operated by Walt Disney World Company. The property covers nearly 25,000 acres (39 sq mi; 101 km2),[2] featuring four theme parks, two water parks, twenty-seven themed resort hotels, nine non-Disney hotels, several golf courses, a camping resort, and other entertainment venues, including the outdoor shopping center Disney Springs.

Hi – my sister and I are bringing our father to NYC in September/October for ‘one last trip’ from the UK, whilst he can still get around. We’ll be a mixed family group of 1 grandpa and 2 mums with one child each. We’d like to be central as Dad is 87 and not as nimble as he once was and ideally we’d like to have interconnecting rooms – say a double double with a king, or a 2 bed suite/apartment. Would be very grateful for your recommendation.

  6. Trattoria Trecolori, 254 West 47th Street, is another very good Italian choice. If you walk along any block in the 40s between 7th and 8th avenues, you’ll find many small restaurants with reasonable menus, often prix fixe pre-theater dinners that are a good deal.
White-sand beaches run the length of the 96-acre Kamalame Cay private-island resort. If your kids aren’t smitten with the place from the moment they hop off the private ferry from Andros, the fresh homemade cookies laid out each afternoon should do the trick. Villas are pricey, but a good choice for multigenerational stays. Alternatively, the all-inclusive Small Hope Bay Lodge on Andros has 21 beachfront cottages.
First time in New York City with kids. They are ages 9 and 11. We have 4 full days and plan to do the main sights: Central Park, a Broadway Show, the Natural History Museum, Times Square, and a few other things. We’ve tentatively decided on something within the triangle north of Times Square.
Cozumel is considered one of the Western Hemisphere’s top diving destinations, and for those who want to explore this spectacular underwater world without shelling out an arm and a leg, El Cozumeleno, facing the Caribbean Sea directly on a white sand beach, is an affordable all-inclusive resort that can help make that a reality. The rooms are no-frills, but you’ll probably be spending most of your time in the water, diving, swimming and snorkeling. There are five swimming pools too, including one with the swim-up bar.
We have a very active 7 year old child and need a kid-friendly hotel near a good Manhattan playground. Not picky about neighborhood – any safe, reasonably central area with a subway station will do. But if it were a cool neighborhood then that’s even better. Budget not a concern. Thanks, Jay.
Tyler Place Resort’s formula for good, old-fashioned family fun features morning and evening children’s programs with afternoons free for families to bike, hike, canoe and sail together. Little ones fish for perch and play dress-up; preschoolers listen to stories and jump on trampolines; and grade-school kids go on nature hikes, participate in gymnastics and put on marionette shows. Tweens take to zip-lines and go on fishing trips while teens add bicycle trips and water skiing. The accommodations, whether in the resort’s Inn rooms or cabins, tend toward basic, but are comfortable. Kids and parents are separated at dinnertime, ensuring parents have time to relax, too.
