Those who think they’ve seen and done it all in the Bahamas should think again. Baha Mar, the multibillion dollar hotel and casino development on Nassau’s Cable Beach, will be fully up and running when Rosewood resorts launches there this spring. (Baha Mar’s Grand Hyatt and SLS properties are already drawing visitors with their sophisticated, contemporary rooms.) On neighboring Paradise Island, the iconic Ocean Club resort is under new management with Four Seasons. And at Atlantis, the adults-focused Cove resort now has an outpost of Sip Sip restaurant, Julie Lightbourn’s Harbour Island favorite, while the family-friendly Coral Towers debuted a new lobby, guest rooms, and pool courtesy of star hotel designer Jeffrey Beers. And T+L’s World’s Best winner Kamalame Cay has added stylish beach bungalows — stand-alone suites that start at a whopping 450 square feet and feature private verandas and outdoor showers. —Jacqueline Gifford

Our travel experts — from travel writers around the globe to T+L’s A-List travel advisors to our own editors — offer their recommendations. Then, we take a look at what places are now at the forefront of the global conversation, whether for new hotels and museums or major international events. In any given year, the cities and countries we recommend as the best places to travel in the world have a lot going on. And of course, we think about those travel destinations that are perennial favorites to determine which ones are reinventing themselves, ensuring there’s always something new to explore.
The New York City Ballet begins its spring season and Broadway plays are in full swing in April. Late in the month, the city’s gardens are at their springtime best. Be sure to see the pink crabapple trees and colorful tulips and daffodils in Central Park’s Conservatory Garden. The park also has many lovely cherry blossom trees, but the real cherry blossom show is at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden where the blooms from some 76 varieties of flowering trees are a glorious sight that inspires a Japanese festival in late April every year. Bring your camera!
Have some hands-on fun at Cayman Turtle Farm, where kids can get up close with reptiles. It’s also a marine park, with freshwater and saltwater lagoons, the largest swimming pool on the island, two waterfalls, an underwater view of a predator tank, and a swim-with-the-turtles experience.
Established in 1957, the Tallahassee Museum intertwines North Florida’s history, nature and wildlife through exhibits, special events and more. The Tallahassee Museum offers about 30 permanent exhibits and a wide range of opportunities to see native animals, such as the Florida panther or the red wolf, in their natural settings. The museum also offers zip-lining courses designed for the whole family.
Tribeca is a great neighborhood for kids and Washington Market Park has 2 good playgrounds. Just down the street is the wonderful Smyth Hotel. The subway is steps from the hotel’s front door. Of course, any hotel close to Central Park (recommended hotels above) will be spoiled for playground choices.
This good-value small chain’s casual and convivial atmosphere belies its well-organised formula: comfort and style rule and, while the food is tasty, you can draw directly on the tables – so it’s a great place for children. The Odiham branch has excellent walking from the back door, and is set in a Grade II-listed 16th-century inn. Behind the car park there’s a footpath that leads through fields and along a canal up to the ruins of Odiham Castle. Alice Holt forest is nine miles (14.5km) away and has trails and a Go Ape ropes course for daredevils. Read expert review
Thanks to Fusions Restaurant and the work of Chef Ash Helal, you don’t have to go far for a creative take on delicious cuisine. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner indoors or outdoors in the courtyard, or opt for a quiet meal in the comfort of your own room with in-room dining.
Families feel truly pampered at this Four Seasons island resort. The 600-square-foot standard rooms are some of the largest in Hawaii, and are as safe and comfortable as they are luxurious (you can request safety netting for balconies, beach gear, and high chairs, all at no extra charge). The knowledgeable concierges provide guidance about family-friendly activities like snorkeling and outrigger canoe excursions, as well as adult adventures such as scuba diving. They can also help arrange tropical family picnics or set up a whale-watching expedition by catamaran. There’s even a complimentary kids program with unique island activities ( gecko hunts, Hula lessons, Hawaiian bowling, and visits with Ricky and Lucy, the resort’s parrot mascot).
What this Seventies building lacks in character externally, it more than makes up for in style, facilities and quirky touches. Kids have their own basement playroom with Nintendo games and table tennis (summer), playground with slides and swings, an indoor children’s pool — and even food for feeding ducks. Three hire boats are just the ticket for hot summer days, as are the gardens and riverside terrace. Children receive goody bags on arrival, there’s an early Ducklings dinner on Fridays, Saturdays and during school holidays. Three duplex rooms have a separate children’s space with television and private entrance. Read expert review
Despite the appearance of the uniformed security personnel, they are not considered a legal law enforcement agency. Disney and The Reedy Creek Improvement District were sued for access to Disney Security records by Bob and Kathy Sipkema following the death of their son at the resort in 1994. The court characterized Disney security as a “night watchman” service not a law enforcement agency and was not subject to Florida’s open records laws. An appeals court later upheld the lower court’s ruling.
Keeping them occupied requires more than a few PlayStations. Are there lots of opportunity for play, supervised activities or bikes to borrow? Is the pool family-friendly, the beach perfect for paddling? We love a kids’ club that embraces local culture, with educational pizza-making, bug safaris or language lessons.
If the children are too young to care that the famous golfing duel in Goldfinger, starring Sean Connery, was filmed here, they can find plenty of other advantages, from a well-equipped games room, outdoor play area, mini football pitch, dedicated times in the pool, tennis lessons and special fitness classes to children’s menus in all three restaurants. In the bedrooms, expect to find activity packs, themed bed linen and personalised cookies at bedtime. Babysitting is also available. Read expert review

We currently have the New Yorker booked at a great price. Is that too far away for the site seeing? How to the hop on buses work? Or would cabs/trains be better to get to Broadway shows, museums? Is the big toy store still in NYC? I am afraid of “I’m tired” and it will be the first week of January, so possibly not pleasant weather.
The Magdalena Grand Beach Resort, set among a virgin mangrove forest and lush tropical vegetation, offers the ultimate escape to paradise at a more affordable price. It includes lots of family-friendly features, like three large swimming pools and a free kids’ club with the chance to learn about Tobago’s green, leatherback and hawksbill turtles. Note that if you get an 8-day or longer ticket with the Park Hopper Plus option, you have a total of 16 or more admissions (8 theme park and 8 water park, etc.), but all admissions still need to be used within a 14-day period. So if you actually wanted to use all of them, you’d have to visit more than one attraction on several days.
In November 1995, Disney announced the building of Tokyo DisneySea, to be owned by Oriental along with Tokyo Disneyland. Oriental and Disney signed the DisneySea licensing agreement in November 1997; the theme park was scheduled to open in 2001 at a cost of $2.6 billion.
We are traveling to NYC on a 2 week roadtrip with 4 kids. I have read some places that it is better to stay in NJ and take public transportation into the city. Would you advise? Can you recommend a good budget friendly hotel on the NJ side that is easy access to NYC. We plan to spend all of our time going to the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Central Park are our “must-sees”. Any help? Thanks in advance! Ashley
Where do we go on the East Coast? During the summer months, visit the scenic coast of Maine, stay at a family resort in Vermont, take a trip to New Hampshire, relax on the beach in Cape Cod and enjoy other family vacation spots. Visit the museums of New York, Boston and Philadelphia, dine a family-friendly restaurants, and watch outdoor theater performances with older children. In the winter, plan a ski trip that will let your kids learn how to downhill ski, cross-country ski or snowboards at a New England mountain resort such as Stowe, Killington or Sugarbush.
Best Parks & Gardens: Some of the most beautiful spots can often be found in the city’s gardens and parks. Not only will you get a chance to admire spectacular blooms, there are also sculptures, lakes, water fountains and interactive features for kids. If you are planning to propose on vacation, parks are often the perfect choice.
Picking the right location to travel to during the busy summer season can make all the difference when it comes to saving money. (There are also many ways to save while on your trip, like pre-packing snacks and making a stop at a local grocery store so you can make some of your own meals.)
Armed Forces History Museum, Largo, closed on January 29, 2017, displays included World War I, Japanese memorabilia associated with the World War II attack on Pearl Harbor, USMC in the South Pacific, D-Day landings, German Third Reich, Korean War and 8063rd M.A.S.H memorabilia.
An interesting way to make your vacation seem even longer would be to choose one of the northern locales where extended daylight gives you more time for outdoor activities. Long days in Finland, Greenland, and St. Petersburg are fascinating features of northern summers. Ski destinations, like Telluride and Mammoth Lakes, also make perfect summer vacation spots, offering spectacular scenery, mountaintop views, and festivals of all kinds.
Working strictly in secrecy, real estate agents unaware of their client’s identity began making offers to landowners in April 1964 in parts of southwest Orange and northwest Osceola counties. The agents were careful not to reveal the extent of their intentions, and they were able to negotiate numerous land contracts with some including large tracts of land for as little as $100 an acre. With the understanding that the recording of the first deeds would trigger intense public scrutiny, Disney delayed the filing of paperwork until a large portion of the land was under contract.
The extra cost on top of a Park Hopper ticket is a flat rate of $26.63, no matter how long the ticket. If you want to add this option to a Base Ticket, you need to also add Park Hopper, so the total cost to upgrade from a Base Ticket ranges from $85.20 to $106.50, depending on length.
Located inside the park, the eco-friendly Falls Resort is set among lush gardens filled with sloths, toucans and monkeys, and it’s just five minutes from wide, sandy Esterillos Este beach. Where should families stay in NYC? If you’re close to a subway station you’ll generally be fine. My favorite locations are Midtown (a large area packed with iconic sights, skyscrapers, and people – try to be within a few blocks east or west of Broadway), SoHo (slightly slower pace than Midtown but still plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes), Greenwich Village and nearby Chelsea (hip with a neighborhood feel and great restaurants).
East Coast Beach Destinations: In addition to the beautiful beaches in Florida, the East Coast of the United States is home to scenic beach towns all along the coast. Visit Portland ME, Portsmouth NH, Atlantic City NJ, Long Island, Myrtle Beach SC and other beautiful places.
With more than 300 days of sunshine each year, the southeastern corner of Washington state is home to three flourishing viticultural regions: the Columbia, Walla Walla, and Yakima Valleys. But in recent years Walla Walla has come into its own as the next must-visit destination for oenophiles, golfers, and cyclists. With more than 140 wineries producing European-style Syrahs, Cabernets, and Merlots, there’s no shortage of tasting rooms in the valley, which hosts four weekend-long wine events each year. The region gets its first high-end resort in February, when Va Piano winemaker Justin Wylie and James Beard Award–winning chef Jason Wilson open the 10-suite Eritage on a 300-acre plot north of the city of Walla Walla.
Florida is home to an extensive variety of museums statewide, there’s something to suit everyone’s interest no matter how niche it might seem. Inside a turn-of-the-century brick warehouse, the Museum of Commerce is a reconstructed streetscape of businesses that operated in Pensacola between 1880 and 1910. Exhibits include historical stores for toys, hardware, music and leather goods, as well as gas station and a print shop, which contains one of the most extensive collections of antique printing presses and type in the Southeast. Horse drawn buggies and an antique local trolley car add to the nostalgia of this quaint recreation of Pensacola’s yesteryear.

Thailand has it all: good food, friendly people and a fascinating culture. Start a Thailand Family Holiday in Bangkok, where you can ride through the city’s famous canals and see the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. In Kanchanaburi, stop for the night where two rivers converge (they were featured in the film, Bridge on the River Kwai). Head north to Chiang Mai to visit a temple (you may hear Buddhist monks chanting at the end of the day). Kids will like the Northern Thai Doll Museum, where over 400 handmade dolls represent Thai culture and dress. Later, tour one of the biggest aquariums in Southeast Asia, Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World, and shop in Bangkok for everything from Jimmy Choo shoes to flower garlands and live crabs.

St. Augustine, FL: Strolling through St. Augustine, you will sometimes have a hard time believing that it belongs to the 21st century America. From the 17th century Castillo de San Marcos on the western shore of Matanzas Bay to the lavish historic Hotel Alcazar that today hosts the Lightner Museum of Victorian times, St. Augustine has retained the elegance and charm of its past and preserved its historic treasures with lots of love and care. Stroll through the cobblestoned streets of the Old City, St. George, Hypolita and Charlotte Streets, and have a cup of coffee in one of the many quaint shops. Visit the Ximenez-Fatio House built in 1798, an architectural gem that showcases the life of 19th century Florida. A visit to the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park and pristine beaches of Anastasia State Park will show you that some things are timeless and never change.
