Holidays to Spain might seem appealing right now, but don’t forget about Portugal in 2018 / 2019. Although there are some amazing coasts on offer around the world, it’ll take a lot to beat some of the sandy spots along the Algarve in Portugal, plus the deals on cheap flights and all-inclusive coastal resorts make Portugal pretty irresistible for your next beach holidays.
If for any reason you decide NOT to make reservations with Vacationkids within those 60 days, your credit card on file will be charged a $150 service fee for the time your agent has invested in your care.
Due to its position on the Ionian and its topography, Lefkada is Greece’s top water sports destination. Besides having a large marina in Lefkaka Town, used as a base for dozens of yacht charter companies, Lefkada is a prime spot for windsurfing. Vasiliki Bay, in the south, is exposed to local thermal winds, creating conditions perfect for beginners in the mornings, and more experienced surfers in the afternoons. It’s also possible to try sea kayaking in Vasiliki. Meanwhile, back in the north, near Lefkada Town, you have kite-surfing at Milos (aka Agios Ioannis). And then there are Lefkada’s spectacular west coast beaches, including Kathisma and the must-visit Porto Katsiki, which has just re-opened following damage in the November 2015 earthquake.

The medieval village of Orpierre, in the Hautes-Alpes départment of Provence, is surrounded by the sort of cliffs that make rock climbers drool, then sweat. While experts take on the challenges of the Quiquillon, Belleric and Adrech faces, beginners can tackle the Quatre Heures cliff or, at the very least, the inflatable climbing tower and climbing walls at Camping des Princes d’Orange. The large campsite, with 124 shady pitches on wooden decks, plus mobile homes and posh tents, has all the facilities kids go crazy for – swimming pool with slides, mini golf, film room and bike hire.
There are a variety of great family-friendly hotels and accommodations in St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra Beach. Previously mentioned Ponte Vedra Inn & Club was voted America’s Best Family Hotel by Travel + Leisure readers. If you’re traveling with kids or catering to a larger group you may want a room equpped with a kitchenette and additional sleeper sofa. Try the Saint Augustine Beach House or rent a condo through Ocean Village Club.
Further north, “The Emerald City” might be home to a rustic charm, with its spectacular fishing season and strong cups of joe, but a Seattle vacation will leave you bursting with excitement and creativity. Pay a visit to the iconic Space Needle or the Museum of Pop Culture to get your creative juices flowing. Need something a little more frenetic? Head southeast to “Sin City.” Whether you want to see high-energy acrobats, an astonishing performance in the Tropicana Theater, or just want to try your luck at the slots, Travelocity is here to help you find the best Las Vegas vacation packages.

About a two-hour drive southeast of Nashville is Chattanooga, home to a surprising number of family-centric activities. This Tennessee town features a zoo with adorable animals (like snow leopards) and an aquarium with freshwater touch tanks and two types of penguins. The Creative Discovery Museum—with exhibits geared toward younger children—is also worth a visit. Kids can also take a ride on a carousel and cool off in the “dancing water fountains” at Coolidge Park. When it’s time to hit the sack, you might want to choose the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel & Complex, where train cars double as hotel rooms.
* A wide array of activities — from treasure hunts and arts and crafts to sandcastle-building and a circus workshop — is scheduled for kids ages 2 to 12, while younger ones are cared for in a nursery setting.
This list is designed for parents looking for something out of the ordinary. From turtle-hatching programs to a close encounter with an elephant, an expedition to forage for your own clams for dinner or kayaking through tidal inlets, these retreats offer experiences the whole family can enjoy together. Whether staying on American soil or trekking to parts unknown, we guarantee a Dropbox full of memories.
Nighttime is perfect for The Island in Pigeon Forge, an entertainment hub with lighted water shows. Pleasant evenings also draw families to the area’s multiple mini-golf courses, including one in nearby Gatlinburg. Gatlinburg is also home to a surprisingly wonderful aquarium given its mountain location; penguins typically steal the show at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies.
Fact: 99% of Americans let vacation days go to waste. JK, it’s really 55%. BUT STILL. That’s depressingly high. So do your part! Grab your friends and get away for the weekend. Wondering where your squad should go? Let us show you the way.
* Has a playground equipped with a pint-size general store; in addition, the facility housing the Kids for All Seasons children’s program boasts a mock pirate ship, a jungle area with a tropical tree house, and stuffed monkeys hanging from a tree.
On the shore of Lake Michigan, this beach in downtown Racine will keep your family active. When your kid isn’t enjoying the summer water, she’ll probably want to set sail on the pirate ships and swing on the ropes at Kids’ Cove, one of the state’s largest playgrounds. Pedal or walk on the bike path about three blocks to Racine Zoo, where kids can feed a giraffe.
Cape Cod has more than its share of beautiful beaches, but it’s especially lovely here. “It has huge tidal flats that are teeming with sea life,” says Karen Flam, who makes the trek to Mayflower every year from Philadelphia. “My 6-year-old daughter, Allison, sits out there for hours digging for sea snails and hermit crabs.” Make plans to come to the beach for the annual sand-sculpture contest in late August — there are six categories including those for kids 3 to 6 and 7 to 11, as well as for families working together.
The nearby area offers lots for families, including the Ringling Museum in Sarasota. Kids will love to explore the Circus Museum, which includes a stunning mini circus that is so fun to check out. There’s also kayaking, a beautiful shopping area, and a marine laboratory and aquarium. The area is home to sea turtles, so depending on your visit, you may see some sea turtle nests.
Steamboat Springs is a dreamboat for families with great children’s ski instructions and a bundle of apres-ski activities. The Kid’s Vacation Center is the starting point for families with a streamlined check-in process and a spacious facility to prepare your young ones for the cold. Lessons are available for kids starting at 2.5-years-old, and there are 5 kids-only slopes where little ones can master the art of the wedge before moving on to the kiddies terrain park. The Rough Rider Basin is a nod to the Old West with teepees, a log-cabin playhouse and snack areas. The whole family will enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the Great Rockies followed with a soak in the area’s natural hot springs. Kids Fly Free domestic packages coupled with Kids Rent Free and Kids Ski Free all reduce the price of one cool family vacation.
This part of the country is ideal for the South African winter sun from May to August, and for swimming of course. There is loads on offer, from the uShaka Marine World, Durban Stadium walk, township tours, boat cruises and the Natal Shark Centre, to Zulu cultural villages with dancing displays.
It’s a well-known fact (among seasoned parents) that toys and other manufactured amusements are no match for the delights found in nature. For those who don’t wish to journey to Africa to walk on the wild side, head to the famed San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. Lion King fans of all ages will love getting to know the zoo’s 4,000 full-time residents, which include elephants, pandas, and of course, lions. You can even go on a safari to get up close and personal with the kings of the jungle. San Diego is also home to SeaWorld, where your little ones can witness whale and dolphin shows or cool down at the water park. And for those of you on a budget, you can save yourself some coin by skipping the waterslides and heading to beautiful (and safe) Mission Beach instead.
Longboat Key, one of the Gulf coast barrier islands, is located right near Sarasota, Fl. It’s easily accessible through the Sarasota Airport, although you could also fly in through Tampa or Clearwater-St. Pete. During my visit during a recent press trip, I stayed at the Resort at Longboat Key Club, a luxury beach resort offering a spa, marina, golf, numerous restaurants, watersports, tennis, and more.
As an online travel agent, we don’t sell package holidays, we let you build your own by giving you access to a wide range of cheap flights, hotels and transfer suppliers, saving you money. In the 1960’s, to boost tourism, the city of Leavenworth transformed itself into a living, working, Bavarian village. Oktoberfest is obviously a big to-do here, and for the other 11 months of the year, the town never stops expressing its quaint character. With adorable boutiques and activities like horseback riding and sleigh rides, you’ll be charmed in no time. Not to be missed: warm cookies and espresso at the Gingerbread Factory!
Located on the Emerald Coast in northwest Florida in the Gulf of Mexico, Destin is home to some of the best white sand beaches in Florida, bright green waters, and fabulous fishing. Waters are so rich in fish that the town is named the “world’s luckiest fishing village.” Kids will be delighted with a visit to the Big Kahunas Water and Adventure Park, a snorkeling trip, or a dolphin cruise.
In Sun Valley, it’s all about the great outdoors. Go hiking along the Baker Lake Trail or check out beautiful blooms at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden. If you are in town from mid-December to March, try going on a sleigh ride followed by dinner at Trail Creek Cabin.
The blue waters and white-sand beaches of Captiva Island stretch into the horizon. So we recommend watching a spectacular sunset at the end of Captiva Drive. But before the sun sets, go boating down the waterways of the island to see local wildlife, including dolphins, crocodiles, blue herons and many different species of colorful birds.
The Île d’Oléron is off the radar of most British holidaymakers, despite the fact that much of the coastline of France’s second-largest island has undeveloped sandy beaches backed by dunes and pine woods. Miles of beach extend along the south-west coast, with acres of space for ball games at low tide, and often good surf for body boarding. But Oléron’s prettiest strand is the more intimate Plage de Gatseau near St-Trojan-les-Bains: overlooking the channel between the island and mainland, its soft sand is spattered with shells. Oléron Les Pins Indigo Campsite is a delightful, back-to-nature site set in a pine forest, 10 minutes by bike (rentals available) from Plage de Gatseau.
Hit this Nordic wonderland with outdoorsman extraordinaire, Sven Lindblad, who is leading a new immersive land and sea adventure this July. Expect hiking and biking in Reykjavík, photo stops for misty geysers and steaming landscapes, a trip to the Golden Circle, and a picnic on Viðey Island. Participants will then board the National Geographic Explorer for a three day jaunt into the wild western coast to inspect remote natural reserves (Látrabjarg cliffs; Hornstrandir peninsula) only accessible by boat. Also joining the trip will be notable Icelanders and an ethno-musicologist. From $4,990 a person.
Sa Pleta is a charming characterful luxury villa, situated in a rural location near Colonia de Sant Pere. It comes with a private chef, host and nanny and has a large pool and a beautiful backdrop over unspoiled countryside and coastline views. Sleeps 6.
St. Croix – I booked a combo ATV/Jet Ski tour. We had an hour ATV tour through the rain forest (and lots of mud) and then were dropped at the beach where we could Jet Ski for an hour. This tour also included 4 beach chairs, 2 umbrellas and food/drink vouchers for their restaurant. This would be a wonderful tour for people with teens.
Williams has all sorts of activities to make your vacation a memorable one. Watch a thrilling rodeo show, drive through graceful pine forests to spy on cute bear cubs and other fauna at Bearizona Wildlife Park, or take to the railroad and spend a day on the Grand Canyon Railway Adventure Package.
Just an hour north of Miami, Delray Beach is a small beachfront town with unexpected sophistication and one of the prettiest beaches in Florida. The city has lively art life with over 20 galleries, and there are art pieces all over downtown. Famous Pineapple Grove Arts District is home to Artists Alley, where visitors can watch artists working in their studios. Nature has created its own art with spectacular Delray Municipal Beach, where kids can rent snorkeling gear and paddle boards.
The 60-mile Pelion peninsula, north of Athens, drips with mythology, history and charm, and is dotted with whitewashed villages with leafy squares in which to munch walnut cake and buy crafts. There are also Byzantine churches, museums in provincial capital Volos and the traditional hill village of Milies, and well-preserved mansions. This is Greece at its best, with excellent beaches to boot. At the Esperos Suites, in Lafkos, nine self-catering villas around an infinity pool sleep three – great for couples with a baby or toddler.

Beyond this lies Buba beach bar in a bay with straw umbrellas, wooden sun-beds and low-key DJ music. Or catch a bus to Brela (8.5 miles), where the blissful pine-scented Punta Rata pebble beach leads to a glistening turquoise sea whose shallows are ideal for children. Behind Makarska rise the rocky heights of Mount Biokovo.
Kids on nature overload will enjoy spending a day in Fort Myers, just across the causeway. At Skatium’s ice rink, admission includes rental skates on Saturday evening, which is teen night (cityftmyers.com/fmskatium). Or BYOB (in this case, board) to Fort Myers Skate Park (cityftmyers.com/skatepark).
Just 15 minutes south of Disney, the sprawling 411-room Reunion Resort is one of Orlando’s priciest condo resorts outside those at Disney. Despite having older TVs, however, its beautiful one-bedroom villas with full kitchens, daily kids’ activities, huge water park, 54 holes of golf, excellent restaurants, and polished service make it well worth the price.
Family life can be both wonderful and exhausting. That’s why The Great Family Vacation is so important—a time to make memories and celebrate your loved ones away from the daily grind. But with so many great family-friendly destinations in the USA, it’s hard to narrow it down. While our list leaves out a few of the obvious big-hitters like Orlando, Virginia Beach, San Diego, and Myrtle Beach, we’re featuring equally amazing spots, where the amenities for children are just as great and the welcome just as warm. With a little help from the local city experts at Apartment Guide, we’ve also highlighted some of the best kid-friendly attractions you won’t want to miss.
Stretching nearly 40 miles between Makarska and Split is the Makarska Riviera, which boasts a number of beach towns with palm tree-lined promenades, ice cream shops and pedal boats to take out onto the delightfully blue water. Book a villa or stay in a family-run campsite along the pebble beach. Off the beach, kids will love hiking around nearby Biokovo Nature Park.
For wide beaches, a 4-acre beachfront park and plenty of space to play, even with your dog, head to St. Augustine Beach in St. Augustine. Walk along the shores where Spanish explorers landed so many years ago, then let the kids go wild at the splash park on the pier. Spend time at nearby Anastasia State Park where you can bike on the beach and paddle in a saltwater lagoon.
A trip across the Rickenbacker Causeway across the beautiful Biscayne Bay is an adventure in itself, but after a short drive from the hustle and bustle of Miami, you will find yourself in true Florida in a tiny island town between two wonderful parks – Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park and Crandon Park.
“More bird song than Pete Tong” is how Lonely Planet describes Menorca, the wilder Balearic isle. It still shares the boho genes of the other islands, in the beguiling towns of Maó and Ciutadella, and at the smattering of gorgeous hoteles rurales – reinventions of hamlets as stylish agrotourisms. Menorca’s beaches are spectacular: Cala d’Algaiarens in the north has some of the best, and emptiest, stretches of sand around. Biniatram agrotourism, an old farmhouse deep in the countryside, has seven apartments and eight guest rooms, a swimming pool and a sports field. It also has its own “private trail”, on which guests can walk to the beach in 25 minutes.
Plan a playdate—or two—in Destin. Thirty minutes west, this hopping town has laser tag, bungee jumping, banana boating, go-karting and the wet and wild Big Kahuna’s water park (bigkahunas.com). A good lodging option is The Emerald Grande at HarborWalk Village, with a Gulf-view pool and free concerts and fireworks on the boardwalk. Rates for one-bedroom condos start at $209 (emeraldgrande.com).

There’s no shortage of things to do both on and off the beach in Virginia Beach. Walk or ride a surrey bike along the 3-mile boardwalk before snapping a selfie with the 34-foot bronze statue of King Neptune. Go horseback riding or take surfing lessons at Resort Beach, then let the kids go wild at Grommet Island Beach Park, a 100% wheelchair accessible children’s park.

Take them paddling through Sarasota Bay and look for manatees and dolphins, let them compete in building sand castles at the Siesta Key Crystal Classic, charter a fishing boat, or go snorkeling, as there is as much under the water as there is above it. And if you can, convince them to go see the Ringling Museum of Art – it will be worth it. But think of it this way: Young kids haven’t quite learned to eye-roll. In most cases, mommy and daddy are still heroes, so you might as well capitalize on that while you can. Go on: Impart your worldly wisdom, share your interests and infect your kids with the travel bug before it’s too late! Here are seven vacations that ideally suit young families looking to get away and make memories together.

Vacations With Children

Listed as one of our 10 Best Beaches for Families in 2014, Deerfield Beach is situated less than 30 minutes from Fort Lauderdale and less than 15 minutes from Boca Raton. Surfers and teens will love the waves at this beach, but the younger kids will enjoy the oversized boulders in the sand that offer shade and privacy on the beach (and are an ideal spot for toddler beach naps). Several restaurants and shops are situated near the sand, as well as on the beach’s boardwalk.
When unaffected by the oil spill, Gulf Shores is an under-the-radar gem with turquoise waters reminiscent of the Caribbean. Wake up early and go deep-sea fishing, spend an afternoon on the beach or play a round of miniature golf at Pirate Island Adventure Golf.
Beaches in Florida have it all, as long as you know just where to look. There’s no shortage of charming getaways, nightlife hotspots and fishing meccas along the state’s coastline. Both the Gulf and Atlantic sides have plenty of cool or quaint towns with their own sandy shores, attracting both young and old looking to escape busy lives.

Forgo fancy duds and pack extra swimsuits for the Abacos’ endless water activities, including boating, snorkeling, swimming and paddleboarding in the clear, shallow waters. Island-hopping is a must: Green Turtle Cay offers plenty of shelling and a bit of history at the colonial settlement of New Plymouth, while the Sunday-afternoon pig roast at Nipper’s Beach Bar & Grill in Guana Cay is a tradition — kids can build sandcastles and splash in the calm blue water while you wait. Abaco Beach Resort’s “Bahama Buddies” program introduces younger visitors to local children and invites them to spend the day together, learning how to catch and cook fish, make island crafts and crack coconuts. There’s a variety of accommodations for all family sizes: oceanfront rooms with two beds, and one-bedroom suites with a pullout sofa.
Beach break? Mountain trek? Wildlife adventure? African odyssey? Summer is that sublime time of year when families can travel unencumbered by school schedules. And choices abound. Some destinations are all about kids, all of the time. Other properties may tolerate children but certainly do not lay out a welcome mat. Then, there is that idyllic place in between: properties that cater to families with thoughtful perks and culturally rich activities.
Just south of Charleston, explore nature, wildlife and beautiful South Carolina coastline on Kiawah Island. Kids can sing songs and take art lessons at Kamp Kiawah, as well as splash and play at Kiawah Beachwalker Park, a quiet beach that’s well-suited for small children. Rent bikes to explore the island or take classes to become a Junior Naturalist.
Break up a day at the beach with an outing to the Cayman Islands National Museum. The colonial-era building depicts the island’s natural and cultural history in 3-D displays, murals and videos. Or spy colorful blue iguanas at the Blue Iguana Recovery Program, located in the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park. A 90-minute guided tour is suitable for the entire family, and if grandma doesn’t share the kids’ fascination for lizards, she can always enjoy the native flora in the park instead.
Another popular park for families with babies and toddlers is Pennsylvania’s Sesame Place. Parents often choose Sesame Place for their child’s first theme park visit because it’s based entirely on the Sesame Street television show and designed specifically for families with young children.

The sand is amazing. There’s no sand quite like it in Florida. It feels great on your feet., It doesn’t get hot in the sun because it’s made from nearly pure quartz crystal. It’s sugar white. And there’s plenty of it. The county park that gives access to Siesta Beach is ample for parking and facilities including a massive covered playground, but having been named the No. 1 beach by Dr. Beach in 2011 and top beach by TripAdvisor in recent years, the parking lot can fill up quick. It’s worth it though. The sand is a gentle slope into the Gulf and makes for a great beach day.

There’s 24 miles of solitude to be had between New Smyrna Beach and Titusville. It takes a while to make it out to the coast, and there are miles of beach only accessible by foot. But if you want to get away from it all, this is the beach for you.
Multiple thrills for variety-seeking families—from theme parks to ethnic food to nature treks. Downtown, there’s the festive Riverwalk (picnic at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park) and the Latin-flavored Ybor City—go here for Cuban sandwiches and Flamenco shows. Orlando surprises visitors with its Asian district. Don’t miss a heaping platter of the oyster crop!

The beaches in Key West are ideal for swimming and snorkeling, and fishing is allowed off the piers at most beaches. Enjoy these activities at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, Florida’s southernmost state park — and one of its most beautiful spots — that’s home to wide stretches of sand and tranquil waters. We recommend renting a 2-person, glass-bottom kayak if you’re looking for a fun but romantic escape.

Just 40 minutes from Tampa International Airport on the Gulf Coast of Florida, Clearwater Beach has a lot to offer those with kids in tow. Obviously there’s the town’s white-sand beach, but for a non-beach activity, consider a trip to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, where kids can meet Winter the Dolphin from the movie “Dolphin Tale.” Planning to stay in town for awhile? Head south to St. Petersburg for a day trip and catch a Tampa Rays baseball game or visit the Great Exploration’s Children’s Museum. An hour drive from Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers is the quiet Captiva Island. If you’re looking for a destination where you don’t have to plan or think (because, well, you do enough of that), this is a great place to park.
The biggest dilemma when chilling on the pearly white sands in Naples is which way to look. On 1 side are the rolling waves, and on the other are the gleaming mansions that make up Millionaires’ Row. One of the most popular beaches at Naples Pier is in the city, on 12th Avenue South. Another great beach lies a few miles north of Old Naples, at the Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park. This is a great place to spread out the family’s beach blanket and camp out for the day, as there are bathhouses and food stands on-site and rentals available for everything from umbrellas to kayaks to snorkeling gear.
They are 250 kinds of shells on the island, and they are so numerous and so beautiful they are difficult to resist. You can also go swimming or fishing, visit a beautiful historic lighthouse, or go for a tropical drink in one of the beach resorts. Beaches are also full of birds – 230 kinds of them – so bring your camera. When you get tired of walking, you can rent a canoe or a bike to make use of the 25 miles of bike paths, or go on a boat tour to see the island from the sea.
