A stylish beach resort on Florida’s Atlantic Coast, with understated nods to Disney’s theme park design, none of the crowds, and some seriously sophisticated touches despite its overtly family-friendly nature. In contrast to the all-out frenzy of Orlando’s offerings, this is pure seaside chill-out territory. Read expert review
In theme park central, the latest is Legoland Florida, a must-do for the younger set (florida.legoland.com). Universal’s Islands of Adventure Wizarding World of Harry Potter is expanding, while next door at Universal Studios a 3-D Despicable Me attraction is set to open (universalorlando.com). Disney’s Hollywood Studios (a teen fave for The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and American Idol Experience) has updated Star Tours with 3-D effects (disneyworld.disney.go.com). And SeaWorld has a third stomach-churning coaster, the face-down Manta (seaworldparks.com/seaworld-orlando). For nature-based adventure, pedal the Cypress Canopy Cycle through the treetops (floridaecosafaris.com).

Founded by Walt Disney in 1955, each new employee at a Disney theme park is trained at a Disney University. Before classes and on-the-job training specific to the job they will be performing in the park, each employee attends the “Disney Traditions” course where they learn of the philosophies and history of Disney’s guest services.
Keep your eyes peeled while snorkeling among the lava rock formations off the resort’s beach on the southwest coast of Maui. You just may spy a turtle. Masks and flipper rentals are available at the beach shack, though you may be tempted to lounge in a Casabella chair instead—especially at sunset. The Grand Wailea also counts a 2,000-foot lazy-river pool, a sizable spa, and a club for kids and teens (with offerings like lei making, hula lessons, and a Lego wall) among its charms.
On June 29, 1957, Disney Production exercised its options to purchase all but AB-PT’s common stock outstanding. This allowed WDP to consolidate DLI into its 1957 annual accounting statements adding four months worth of net profits, $511K. In June 1960, Walt Disney Productions completed the purchase of AB-PT’s share of the company for nearly $7.5 million and its TV contract, and the theme park became a fully owned subsidiary of Walt Disney Productions.[CDL 6] The first Audio-Animatronic attraction, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, opened at Disneyland in 1963.

Very nice resort – my in-laws used their time share for a week here in early December and we came along with our 9 month old. Unfortunately the weather was not as cooperative as we would have liked so we didn’t make as much use of all the great amenities as we likely would have in the warmer months but the resort is still very beautiful. We stayed in the Phase II portion (3 bedroom, 2 bath units with a kitchen). Very nice rooms – lots of space and very comfortable overall. Each unit also has a very nice screened in balcony with a table and chairs. However, I have two complaints. First, the third room is VERY small! It is located right by the front door and contains a set of bunk beds and a TV. There basically only enough room for the beds and a tiny bit of room to walk. We were hoping to set up our daughters crib in that room but the door could not be closed with the crib in the room and only one side of the crib was accessible. Second, the maintenance of the room was not the best. When we checked in we had multiple burned out light bulbs, a lamp was unplugged, and the window in the bunk room was open the slightest amount (which we didn’t notice until the 3rd day) which made that room very cold! Despite these problems we had a very enjoyable stay. The staff at the front desk were great and quickly had maintenance up to the room to replace the burned out light bulbs. There is at least one “event” hosted by the resort each day including a breakfast, and a ping-pong tournament. The beach is beautiful and the pools are very nice as well (and both are clean and well maintained). The beach was very quiet in December but I imagine it could get pretty busy in the warm months – however, with 2 pools and a nice stretch of beach I can’t imagine it being too crowded.
