Coming to NYC beginning of August with our 2 kids (7&9). We don’t really want to be in Times Square. We also want a nice hotel that has a bar we can get drinks at night. Free breakfast would also be a plus. Walking distance to restaurants (not chain). Kenleh
Over the past few years, South Korea’s Gangwon Province has shed its sleepy past and come into its own as a prime winter-sports destination — a transformation that will take center stage during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics (February 9–25). Ahead of the big event, the region will debut a new high-speed rail line that will whisk travelers from Incheon International Airport to the resort town in just 70 minutes, making it easier to access the Taebaek Mountains’ panoramic pistes and tourist-friendly attractions. Powder hounds will want to lodge at the InterContinental Alpensia Pyeongchang Resort, which commands a prime location at the foot of the Alpensia ski slopes, steps from two Olympic-class runs, and is one of a handful of hotels built for the games. Break from all the outdoor action at the Ocean 700 indoor water park, complete with wave pools and tubing rides. —Talia Avakian
Active Getaways: It’s amazing how many things kids are interested in if you sit down and talk to them about it. A 12-year-old may want to take a cooking class and learn how to prepare meals using farm-fresh ingredients with the hotel chef. A 5-year-old may want to see a polar bear swimming in a pool in a local zoo. A 3-year-old may be extremely interested in building various machines from blocks and legos so his ultimate dream vacation may be a morning spent at Legoland. Getaways with a touch of adventure create fun memories. In California, visit Safari West and watch unique wildlife in a natural setting. Take a cruise aboard Disney Fantasy, a mega ship that offers many things to do and comfortable staterooms with an extra half bath. At Vista Verde Ranch in Colorado, kids can go horseback riding and learn about the inns and outs of a working dude ranch. Lake Villarrica in Chile is a stunning lakeside getaway with a view of a volcano. Explore the natural wonders of the Pikes Peak region of Colorado, go horseback riding and visit a zoo. Other cheap family vacations include Yellowstone and Jackson Hole where you will be surrounded by the spectacular Tetons.
Visitors may want to return to the Belgian capital in 2018 to visit two cutting-edge museums. The Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art opened in the once-infamous Molenbeek district’s old Belle-Vue brewery this past spring, to showcase contemporary art from around the world. There’s also the Citroën Cultural Centre, a new collaboration with Paris’s Centre Pompidou, which will launch its first exhibition in May. The edgy JAM Hotel, an industrial-chic property with exposed brickwork and concrete beams housed in a former art school, is the perfect place for culture-lovers to stay. Don’t leave town without paying homage to Belgium’s UNESCO-recognized beer culture at youthful breweries like Brasserie de la Senne or Brussels Beer Project, both of which are shirking brewing traditions in favor of more experimental microbrewery techniques. —Meredith Bethune

Disney Pictures took another push at additional adaptations in the 2010s. By November 2010, Jon Favreau had been tapped to develop the Magic Kingdom park into a “Night at the Museum” like film, with Strike Entertainment signed on to produce it after a script by Ronald D. Moore was turned down. Another Haunted Mansion film was in the works with Guillermo del Toro as of August 2012. Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride ride film was in the works at Disney Pictures by January 2013. Tomorrowland, first to be loosely based on a theme park area, was announced in January 2013 for a December 2014 release. Also in 2013, American Broadcasting Company had ordered a pilot based on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. It’s A Small World was added to the list of known projects in April 2014. What this Seventies building lacks in character externally, it more than makes up for in style, facilities and quirky touches. Kids have their own basement playroom with Nintendo games and table tennis (summer), playground with slides and swings, an indoor children’s pool — and even food for feeding ducks. Three hire boats are just the ticket for hot summer days, as are the gardens and riverside terrace. Children receive goody bags on arrival, there’s an early Ducklings dinner on Fridays, Saturdays and during school holidays. Three duplex rooms have a separate children’s space with television and private entrance. Read expert review

You could stay in New Jersey near the PATH train into NYC (Hoboken or Newport are the best choices) – but in general, if you’re here to see New York City then stay in New York City. There are few family-friendly places to stay on the New Jersey side of the river, close to NYC, but one that might work is the Courtyard Jersey City in Newport. It’s about 30 minutes by PATH train to Penn Station and then from there to the various sites you’re interested in. Better to stay at a cheap hotel in New York City.
The largest island in the world, Greenland is the perfect escape from summer heat, with temperatures reaching only into the 50s. The days are long in July, and the area above the Arctic Circle experiences perpetual daylight during two months of summer. Guided boat tours out of Nuuk let visitors cruise the fjords, sail between icebergs, and encounter whales, seals, walrus, and other wildlife. Hiking, backpacking, kayaking, climbing, and biking are also popular. Summer is whale watching season, and humpbacks, finbacks, and minke whales can be seen feeding in the waters around Greenland. Dog sledding is available during summer on Disko Island, giving visitors a chance to experience this traditional (and adorable) means of transportation.
Cape Hatteras Island offers a budget-friendly beach vacation, with a multitude of tranquil stretches of sand to relax on as well as the chance to enjoy more active pursuits like scuba diving, surfing, standup paddle boarding and fishing.
This German town lays claim to not one but two of the world’s greatest opera houses. Most music lovers know about the acoustically perfect Bayreuth Festspielhaus, built in 1876 by composer Richard Wagner as the home for his summer music festival. But the city also contains the grandest Baroque theater in the world, the Margravial Opera House, built between 1744 and 1748 by Princess Wilhelmina of Prussia. Named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2012, the theater has been closed for repairs for the past six years. It reopens in April 2018 with a performance of Artaserse by the 18th-century German composer Johann Adolph Hasse (tickets go on sale in February). Bayreuth also makes an excellent starting point from which to explore the rest of the region, famous for its hundreds of Bavarian biergartens and vineyards producing internationally renowned Franconian wines. —Christopher Tkaczyk
Set up base in your thatched, over-water villa and send your budding Crusoes on tropical adventures along jungle-fringed beaches lapped by current-free waters – perfect for early-years snorkelers and kayakers. Start spreading the news: New York’s Times Square is an even bigger tourist attraction. At Gulliver’s Gate, gawk at thousands of miniature figures, replicas of famous cities, trains that move and more. Pop into the new Opry City Stage, bringing Nashville to urban cowpokes with performances, exhibits and a restaurant. The National Geographic Encounter: Ocean Odyssey takes visitors on a voyage under the Pacific. But you won’t get wet.
